Welcome! I hope your stay in the quiet, garden-facing bedroom with a queen bed (and your own separate bathroom) will provide a restful sleep so you have fresh energy for exploring this wonderful part of Canada. For guests travelling with a friend or family member who require their own room, I have a comfortable double futon in my office.
PERFECT for those who love the outdoors & hiking/cycling: quiet, comfortable home with pleasant writer/host in gorgeous coastal town. Private bdrm & bath, shared kitchen in spacious townhouse backing hiking trails.
My bright and spacious 3-bdrm, 3-bath, 3-level townhome is very near jaw-dropping Holland Creek Trail & a plethora of other connecting trails. Enjoy the forest, waterfalls, swimming holes, and incredible hiking and mountain biking.
After a restful sleep on a comfortable queen-sized bed, enjoy morning coffee and toast (homemade Irish soda bread) or a blackberry smoothie on the house. Relax with the dark-eyed juncos and other birds on the deck in the small back garden area (facing a "living wall"), or glimpse the mountains from the balcony.
I live at the top of the hill and can walk to historic downtown Ladysmith in 20 minutes (or less), and to our fabulous Transfer Beach Park (great ocean swimming, kayak rentals, free Sunday night summer music concerts, Farmer's Market Tuesdays, or just enjoy the sailboats and scenery) in 25. If you're driving, you can be on the beach in a flash.
This is an ideal location if you wish to also visit Nanaimo (15 mins), Chemainus (10 mins), Duncan (20 mins), and Victoria (approx. 60 mins). A great stopping point if Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Campbell River or Tofino are your eventual destinations.
The kitchen, dining, living area, main floor bathroom, balcony and back deck are shared with the owner. There's much room for storing bikes, kayaks, luggage, etc. inside. Parking is on the road approximately a one minute walk away.
I will try to help make your time in Ladysmith one of the highlights of your visit to Vancouver Island. I work from a home office but have a fairly flexible schedule. I know that many guests will have their own places to go, people to see, and things to do, and/or they'll just want time to relax. If guests desire solitude and little interaction, I respect that. For those who wish to get out and hike with me around the local Holland Creek Trail, watch a good film, have a game of cribbage, or even sing a few songs together, that's super! I'm an outgoing "people person" who adores meeting new folks and hearing their stories (travel and otherwise).
Note: I don't cook, so you'll be on our own in the food department (buying, cooking and clean-up, if you wish to make meals here), apart from the breakfast options described above. Tea will always be available.
I will be present during your stay.
I adore my moments-away proximity to some of the best hiking in Canada. I love the mountain and ocean views from the hilltop behind me. I can't say enough about the streams, rivers, swimming holes, and lakes I frequent, and am thrilled that the ocean-swimming here is (reportedly) the warmest north of San Francisco Bay. I'm besotted with Ladysmith's famous bakery (people literally line up out the door for the cinnamon buns), and fantastic coffee shops. I treasure how quickly I can be in Nanaimo to throw crab traps at the government pier, or in Chemainus to enjoy the myriad quaint shops. I'm thrilled with the music scene on the west coast, the abundance of galleries, and the iconic farmers' markets, ie: Duncan, Cedar. I cherish being just an hour from Victoria ... and it's a spectacularly scenic drive. I'm wild about the thrift shops and the blackberry picking, the salmon and old growth cedars and firs.
Ladysmith is small enough to be a smile-at-strangers community, big enough that you can get whatever you need. (And I'm from Saskatchewan, so don't even get me started on the glorious climate!)
Ladysmith is approximately 15 minutes from the Nanaimo Airport (YCD), and about 25 minutes from the two Nanaimo ferry terminals (Duke Point and Departure Bay). (Note: if you require pick up, I can often arrange to be at the airport or ferry for a competitive rate). A public bus runs from Ladysmith to Duncan, and Victoria, and there is local taxi service.
This is a tri-level, so it's not ideal for anyone who's uncomfortable with stairs.
I speak mid-level Spanish, and love having opportunities to practise it.
Laundry rates: washing $5/load drying $5/load. (Sorry, but Hydro is expensive in BC).
I will be here while you are, and look forward to answering your questions about the community. If we both have the time, I'd be happy to take you on a hike on nearby Holland Creek Trail ... about a five minute walk to the trailhead from my door.
I have just replaced all the flooring in my home, and ask that only water be taken upstairs (no coffee, red wine, or other beverages with staining potential). Thank you!
I respect my townhouse neighbours so will only accommodate quiet and responsible guests. A glass or two of wine is fine, smoking and drugs are not. Loud music and/or partying is not an option here. Host is early-to-bed, early-to-rise. The house is "shoes off," please, and as I've just replaced all the flooring, I ask that only water be taken to the top floor - no red wine, coffee, or other beverages with staining potential.
If kitchen is used for cooking, please clean up after.
