Fulcanelli - Marvellous 90sq.mt Bologna centre

This marvellous apartment (90 sq.mt) is on the 4th floor, with elevator, in Palazzo Banchi. Located in the very heart of Bologna city centre, on the eastern side of Piazza Maggiore, it is placed right beside San Petronio Basilica.

The apartment is on the attic floor and has a panoramic room on the upper floor (to be accessed from a wooden staircase). The original exposed beams have been maintained during the renovations and become part of the furniture, bestowing an intense atmosphere. There is beech flooring and big skylights drenching the apartment with natural light. The apartment has high-end finishes, such as air conditioning, independent heating, and sound-proofed, insulated windows and doors. The furniture is completed by some refined pieces of modern art and lithographs of famous Italian artists, that bestow an elegant, refined atmosphere to the ambience.

Guests are welcomed into a foyer with a corridor taking into the living room. In the corridor there is the laundry. The living room is furnished with a dining table seating up to 7 people, 2 single sofa beds and a flat screen TV. The open-plan kitchen, custom-made and obtained under the centerpieces, is fitted with oven, dishwasher and a big L-shaped countertop.

The night area has two bedrooms, a single bedroom and two bathrooms. The guest bedroom is located on the left of the living room and is lit by two huge skylights. On your way to it you cross an anteroom with a closet; the bedroom is furnished with a comfortable double bed (made of two single beds) and a chest of drawers. The bathroom, with blue mosaic tiles, is very spacious and equipped with a shower stall.
The master bedroom has a big window offering ample views of Bologna city centre and the neighbouring hills. There is a double bed (made of two single beds), a huge chest of drawers and a pouf. Guests benefit from a private bathroom with tub and a walk-in closet.
Upstairs there is a loft space with a single sofa bed, with full views of Bologna city centre – from San Petronio basilica to the hills - and with a furnished terrace.

Important: guests are required to pay a city tax, not included in the price.

This is a great location and a nice apartment. But at this price, we expected much more. The agent was 30 minutes late greeting us (a miscommunication, they said), the hot water was unavailable both mornings (yes, it's an old building), the front door lock to the building was broken, leading us to discover a very drunk guy drinking a beer in the hallway at 9am, and we found a used profalactic in the hallway. We might have excused some of this had the agent not decided to stop responding to texts/e-mails after it was clear that things were not going as well as we both might have hoped. Not OK. Finally, while the apartment is nicely renovated, the furnishings are stylish but sub-IKEA standard. Fine for a 200EU/night apartment, but not OK at 500+ per night. This apartment is managed by a business, Hallis, not an individual, and Hallis---you can do better.

Bettina manages the appartment on Airbnb on behalf of a local Bologna rental-company. Unfortunately there was quite a bit miscommunication. We didn't receive the address prior to arrival and nor had the local contact received my phone-number. And no one answered our phone calls when we tried calling. So we ended up waiting for more than an hour before we - in a stroke of luck - bumped into Bettinas contact. A bit of a frustrating start to our stay! The apartment itself is great, great location - and especially the balcony is unbelievable. The elevator in the building didn't work, so be prepared for quite a bit of walking on stairs as the apartment is on the top floor!

The apartment was fabulous in particular the location. We were met promptly by Bettina's colleague. Each room was beautiful and well lit. One of the bedrooms did not have a window so you have to make sure the A/C works in that room. The weather was still cool enough in April that we didn't need it. The terrace has a view to die for :-) Overall, it was very nice experience and would go again!
