The Piggery is a delightful, sun filled, light and airy, two bedroom, two bathroom detached home on Ham Farm. Stylish, cosy and beautifully designed and hand made by artists, The Piggery offers a unique and unforgettable stay near the coast in Devon. The traditional Orchard to the South, planted by us fifteen years ago, boasts vintage cider apples, delicious cookers and eaters plus mulberry, plums, perry pears, medlar and quince. We produce our own cider and apple juice too..
This contemporary and highly original home at Ham Farm in rural South Devon offers all the modern conveniences, including a dishwasher and washer. Every item has been carefully chosen or made to compliment the architecture and to ensure a comfortable stay. Much of it designed and made by the owners or their friends. Whether you decide to sit at home and enjoy the serenity of the countryside, the views over the orchard, private garden and patio and the cosy warmth of the wood burning stove, or travel farther afield to enjoy the exquisite landscape of the South Hams from a very central location, The Piggery offers everything you need to make your stay easy, relaxing and fun.
Well situated a short walk away from Loddiswell, and right in the centre of the South Hams, The Piggery offers easy access to the stunning coastline with its famous South West Coast Path, beautiful and secluded beaches, magnificent Dartmoor, and all the amenities the South Hams has to offer: Kingsbridge (10 mins.), Dartmouth (25 mins.), Salcombe (25 mins.) and Totnes (25 mins.) are all worth visiting, each offering something special. There are many charming villages close by, and the internationally recognised Dartington Estate is within 30 minutes. Loddiswell has in the past been a little overlooked but offers such a lot on many levels, we love it here!
For those who like to walk, there are essentials available in the village via a short footpath and there are numerous trails, green lanes and Avon River walks that begin right at your doorstep and may be interrupted with a delicious cream tea or lunch at Avon Mill Garden Centre.
Other benefits include plenty of parking for up to 3 cars, drive up access, expert local knowledge…..
The bedrooms are small but perfectly formed.. the larger has a very comfortable King size bed complete with boutique Egyptian bed linen. The smaller, with its en-suite shower and loo is a narrow (4') but extra long double and can sleep two cuddly people or children who don't mind sharing. We also have a single mattress with bedding provided for a small extra charge - please ask when booking. Please let us know if you have kids as there are a couple of provisos regarding care of its furnishings ..
There is shared parking, but with plenty of space reserved for The Piggery. We are happy for visitors to walk across the land provided care is taken to close gates and be mindful of livestock. Every so often we press apples into juice and make cider. We have an orchard bursting with fruit, and we can point you in the direction of wonderful wild foods depending on the season. We sell our own apple juice, cider and some chutneys. The Piggery has its own private garden - not quite finished yet so please bear with us - and a beautifully sheltered Terrace dining area overlooking the valley and orchard.
We are both artists/makers and are pretty sociable. We are Open in the Farmhouse 2 till 6pm every Thursday for visitors to see our work and are always happy to show people round and will find the time if they like what we do but would rather come on a different day. Apart from that we are always interested in meeting new people - our household centres around the dining table and kitchen and we always have coffee at the ready. . We won't intrude on your time in The Piggery though unless you invite us!
The Piggery has been very carefully built and finished to a high standard using many specially made features, including many examples of our work. Where we can we have used natural materials, clay paints etc and have incorporated much that is reclaimed and turned into something new. It's fundamentally a handmade house. We hope you will love your time enjoying it's pleasures and as it's new we would appreciate your feedback to make it even better...
If you really would like a TV we can supply one..... The Piggery is deliberately TV free as a rule!
These are mostly guidelines so you know what to expect..
We have neighbours and the farm is a mostly peaceful place so please be considerate with music etc.. Please read instructions for the heating system, kitchen care, rubbish disposal, private drainage system on arrival.
We provide wood for the first fire ready laid and, in winter, lit before your arrival. Further wood is readily available from nearby garages and our handy Post Office. No muddy shoes/boots etc inside please - we would prefer outdoor shoes to not be worn inside. No stilettos or metal cleats on shoes inside - the floor is solid oak and will mark badly.
The Piggery is made to accommodate a maximum of 4 people, but we are happy for you to invite guests for an evening meal etc. though it is not suitable as a full on "party house".
No smoking please. No pets. Please talk to us if you have children - it isn't particularly child friendly -its a little vulnerable to sticky fingers etc - but you know your child best and we love kids too!
We are artists, creators, apple juice and cider makers, bread bakers, swimmers, dancers, curious, foodies, mushroom hunters, much visited and sometimes chaotic... In amongst this The Piggery is our creation and is strangely calm, well ordered and unusually clean - we would so love it to be our home so if you feel a tinge of envy from us... you know why!
