Someday you'll find yourself in Ellsworth, Maine. And when you do you are welcome to stay at my home, Heading Up. Casual lodging in a comfortable private home.
Located in Ellsworth, this is the heart of Downeast Maine and is close to all the interesting and utterly gorgeous local attractions. Bar Harbor is 30 minutes away, Schoodic 40 minutes, Blue Hill 20 minutes, Stonington 50 minutes and Machias 1 hr,10 minutes. Staying in Ellsworth with its authentic and vibrant downtown is the most convenient town to all of Hancock County.
Since I'm a local myself I'll steer your compass on the best Maine adventures from Acadia to Stonington to Moosehead Lake to Canada, and everything in-between. I've been in the food and lodging biz up here for 40 years so my wealth of experience and passion for the area will aid in giving you a great vacation experience. Or if you already know what you want to do here, I'll step back and listen to you. There is always something new to learn.
My home is a 1937 Dutch Colonial with lots of room to spread out that is sunny all day and has a nicely landscaped yard. Located on a quiet side street in one of the city's most desirable areas, the house offers plenty of privacy for you with two separate livingrooms, a new spacious kitchen, glassed in porch and deck along with a beautiful stone terrace surrounded by a cottage garden and a garage to stash bikes and anything else you might want to leave behind for your day trips.
Your bedroom has a queen size bed with original Maine artwork on the walls and is decorated in a tasteful cottage look..Until I get the new bathroom finished you will share an upstairs bathroom with me, but you'll never know I'm around. Plush towels, nice bedding and a comforter make it hard to leave. And you just might need the comforter for those slightly chilly nights when the ocean breezes fill the air.
A French press is always on the counter for whenever you want a cup of locally roasted coffee. Tea drinker? I have a nice selection. My house is roomy so there is lots of space for both privacy and to move around.
Your cell phone always works here and wifi is always on.
Located within walking distance of our historic and lovely downtown you will find great spots where the locals hang out like the Maine Grind and a James Beard award winning restaurant, Cleonice. A great pub awaits you for local color, homemade ice cream for your sweet tooth and an absolutely fabulous seafood restaurant, the Union River Lobster Pot, that serves the freshest lobster around is right down the street. Asian food, pizza and lobster rolls are a short car ride away.
Something new this year is my friend at Morton's Moo reasonably priced lobster boat ride down the Union River to Bluehill Bay which I can arrange a trip for you . Or if you've brought your kayak some of the best river to ocean tripping is right here. Or try tubing down the Union River. I'll even provide you with a tube.
Traveling with your dog? As long as Fido is well behaved, can handle cats and likes my Basset, Gus, we certainly can accommodate.
NPR is usually tuned in for All Things Considered and the daily paper edition of the New York Times is always on the kitchen counter. You are welcome to peruse my generous library of maps, guidebooks and Maine based magazines for your pleasure and use.

Someday you'll find yourself in Ellsworth or Hancock, Maine. And when you do, you are welcome to stay with me.
I have two separate listings that you are welcome to consider. The first is in my home in the small coastal city of Ellsworth which is the physical center of Hancock County. Or 8 miles away on Route 1 in Hancock, closer to Schoodic at Acadia National Park, where I operate a small inn that has lovely rooms on two bucolic acres in a country setting. When you stay in my either in my comfortable home or at the inn you are close to all the attractions from Acadia National Park to lobster boats to remote islands and all the great cultural, restaurant and shopping escapades that you could want. Plus, the eastern most point in the US and Canada are a day trip away.
I am a local entrepreneur, writer and metal sculptor who has lived in the Downeast Maine area for over 40 years. I love living here on the Maine coast where I bicycle, boat, kayak, hike, walk, ski and explore. The town where I live, Ellsworth, is a great stepping off place to discover the rich and interesting places to visit while in the area. I take the time exploring all the beautiful natural wonders like Acadia Natl Park, Bold Coast Trail, Downeast Sunrise Trail, cozy fishing villages, art galleries, fresh water swimming, restaurants and enjoy sharing what I know with others.
My spacious home is located on a quiet side street right in Ellsworth, where my book lined walls, comfy furniture, original Maine artwork and lovely back yard are available to all my guests. My inn, Ironbound, is a comfortable property where flourishing gardens, comfortably chic rooms and our bistro style restaurant with an edge on sustainability serving locally sourced foods, has local flair and is a great place to settle in.
My friendly, well behaved Basset, Gus, is primarily at my home, but makes his way over to Ironbound.
We're Maine. We're Real.
