This is the front gate to the property. I only photographed it because I made it and it took ages.See the blue door? That leads into the studio/apartment building. To the right is the house where we live.

Now that Instant Book is being forced on hosts, you and I might not have a chance to chat before you book. Read the FULL description and look at the photos carefully before you book. It's a big space on the first floor of an old warehouse. Downstairs is a working art studio. Guests love our place - read the reviews. The guests who love it most are the ones who like the idea of staying in a warehouse flat on top of a studio and engaging with our odd extended household and neighbourhood.

A while ago, Airbnb sent a New York photographer/artist/writer called Todd Selby around the world to stay in 5 Airbnb properties. He went to London, Paris, LA, Tokyo and....... Marrickville. Airbnb and Todd thought ours was the most interesting Airbnb property in Sydney.

Then last year, when Qantas did their frequent flyer partnership with Airbnb, they picked this property as one of the best in Airbnbs in Sydney. I think it got the 'quirky' vote.

Yes, it does seem strangely inexpensive compared to many other Airbnb listings considering how big it is. Keeping the price down means we attract more interesting people.

You’ve already decided to come to Sydney, so there is no need to tell you about the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, art galleries, those pesky kangaroos and all the rest. Sydney is a great city. I would love to see it as a tourist.

Marrickville is an older suburb not far from the city – maybe 4 miles (7klm). The city is where the Opera House and Bridge and all that stuff is. It’s a 15 minute train ride into the city from Marrickville – I work in the city, so I know. (And the train station is a 7 minute walk from home.)

In the 1950s and 1960s, lots of Greeks settled in Marrickville. Then in the 1970s it was the Vietnamese who ended up here. So the suburb has an interesting mix of people and there is great (and cheap) food available in walking distance from home.

The airport is very close, but it’s still a $30 taxi ride – they must take the long way.
The apartment is on the top floor of a two story building attached to our house that was built in 1895 as a bakery.

Downstairs in this building, my wife (the artist) has her studio, so if you feel like mucking around with some paint or clay, she’ll be happy to muck around with you. (If you’re an artist yourself, you may never want to leave.)

The pad is a dedicated holiday rental. Nobody needs to move out for you to move in, so you won't find drawers filled with other people's underpants and stuff like that. The staircase between the two levels is open, but the apartment is private. If Lisa and friends are in the studio downstairs, you will hear a bit of chit chat. The apartment is one room about 95 sqm. Yep, it’s a massive room. There is also a mezzanine with a single bed and ladder access. The photos show very well what the space is like. There is a fully equipped kitchen with decent knives and saucepans etc. It has a proper bathroom (behind the sliding red wall).

The apartment has wireless internet and a television and DVD player, but for those like me not into new gadgets, there are books to read and a turntable with a couple of hundred 70s and 80s records (they’re those big round black things that people used for music last century). The furniture is very last century, too.

You can see the double bed in the photos. It’s a proper bed – not a couch. There is also a single bed up in the loft.
On the downside, because it is a big space in an old building it can get a bit cool in the middle of winter and a bit warm in the middle of summer.

In the backyard there is a vege garden, chickens and a hammock. It’s a pretty typical and slightly unkempt inner suburban backyard, not one of those fancy manicured ‘outdoor rooms’ you see in magazines. It’s so messy I didn’t even photograph it. You can smoke out in the yard – and do a bit of gardening if you’re inclined.

The separate house next to the bakery building is where I live with my family. There are four of us – two adults and two kids aged 15 and 17. The apartment is NOT a safe space for kids, even well trained ones. The open stairs and ladder to the loft are not kid safe.

We can supply some bread, butter, vegemite (of course), tea bags, sugar, milk and that sort of stuff for when you arrive to get you started. But 200 metres up the road is a huge supermarket that stays open till midnight most nights.
The apartment is exactly how it looks in the photos. It's a cavernous space in an old industrial building with an eclectic collection of stuff. If you feel more comfortable in 5 star hotels where people put little chocolates on your pillow, this might not be the place for you.

Feel free to ask questions if any of the above is not clear enough. It’s probably best that we correspond by email before you make a booking so there are no surprises or disappointments for either of us.

The stairs up to your pad are in the art studio, so you will pass through that space often. You are of course welcome to hang around and have a chat and a drink and maybe make pot or something.
The backyard has a hammock and chairs and is a nice place to sit in the afternoons. If you are a gardener and missing your garden, I've got plenty of tools you can use. If you are a DIY guy and missing your shed, I'm always keen for company in my shed.

Now that Instant Book is being forced on hosts, we don't get a chance to talk before you make a booking.
This space is NOT suitable for children of any age.
The pictures show the space very well. It is a big, old space in a warehouse. Beneath the pad is a working art studio, so there are times when people are in there doing arty stuff. They like it when people come down for a chat and you might like to join in.
I hope you will respect the apartment.
It is a separate building, so you can come and go as you please.
It's not a place for parties, but I don't imagine many travellers have wild parties?
The backyard is for smoking. And gardening if you feel like it.
If in doubt about anything, you can ask us - we live next door.

您还必须确认以下情况
需爬楼梯 - It's one flight of stairs from the studio up to your pad. Have a look at the photos and you'll see them.
可能会有噪音 - Your pad is on top of Lisa's art studio. When we are downstairs sound travels up. You are of course welcome to come down and perhaps make something.
房源里养有宠物 - There is a cat, but it doesn't go upstairs.
房源里不能停车 - There is plenty of parking on the street, so you'll be fine.

First off i want to say thank you to Scott and his family! They made what would have been an amazing trip an absolutely magnificent and unforgettable experience. The space was just like the pictures showed and better! When I arrived in Sydney Scott was waiting for me to arrive to his lovely abode to show me his space and point out all the little details from where the silverware was, to quirkey old school light switches, etc, etc. Once there Scott took me and my cohort around his neighborhood telling us the history of the area, great places to eat, how to use the train and even had a couple spare opal cards! One of the things i really appreciated was that Scott gave me some quests! He printed me out a map and explained some amazing walks to really learn the city and sydney harbour as whole! His recommendations were absolutely stellar. This man and his wife deserves an award. I have never felt more at home while staying at an AIRBNB. When I return to Sydney I will 100% make an attempt to stay with Scott and his amazing place again!

The place was filled with an eclectic-fun design and very accessible to public transportation. The host was nothing short of generous and friendly and always here to lend a hand. I have nothing but positive things to say about our time there and will book again if we make it back to Australia!

Scott and his family have a great space! Very unique and with a lot of history. Scott is a wealth of knowledge and we had fun chatting about life and the local area. The space itself is very inviting and eclectic, but in the good kinda way. Each piece of furniture has a story as well as the building. The building is old so it has some features that an older building would have... it's called character... they have a cat... watch out that it stays outside

Behind the flat white facade at the edge of this Marrickville sidewalk lies a magical oasis for weary travallers. Through a family garden and above a busy art studio, Lisa and Scott have endowed a luxuriously sized space with smart design, vintage furniture and appliances, and repurposed school cabinetry. Can you imagine 250 square meters of high ceiling skylit space after enduring airline compression? Prrovocative and evocative, this wonderful room has been our temporary home for two yearly visits and will be our destination for years to come.

One of the best AirBNB experiences we've ever had, straight up. Scott is a funny, easygoing, and communicative host—one we were in touch with from before we even booked. His wife Lisa is a talented artist and his two daughters smart and charming. They've really outdone themselves decorating the loft—it belongs in a glossy design magazine. The creature comforts are all around, from a well-outfitted kitchen (toaster, good knives, French press, a vintage oven and stove, etc.) to a good, hot shower to about 15 choices of seating. We had loads of interaction with the family, including multiple breakfasts of fried eggs with salmon and fresh croissants. Scott took us on a mini street art tour of Sydney (with stops at the university and fish market) and we were invited to join Lisa and her artist friends at their weekly open studio night downstairs. We only stayed seven days but would've loved to stay longer, as this is a family you'd be lucky to know. Marrickville is excellent neighborhood, as well—lovely, quiet, with great Greek and Vietnamese food and excellent cafes (you *have* to eat at Cornersmith), and the train to downtown about a 5-10-minute walk away. The family was thoughtful enough to hook up with Opal cards, and anything else we needed during our stay (umbrellas, a washing machine, etc.). We are so grateful for meeting these hosts and would return in a heartbeat.

Scott was really welcoming, invited us to dinners and events and made the check-in/out process very easy. The space is truly unique and spacious! Another bonus was the easy access to the train that is direct to the city circle. This is an easy place to stay long-term! Scott even dropped us off at our next stay, which was really helpful with all the luggage we were carrying.

Scott and his family were exceptional hosts and made our move to Australia worry-free and fun! We stayed with Scott for a month while we started a new job and searched for an apartment. We were greeted upon arrival and given a neighbourhood tour. Scott was so helpful in answering questions about Australian life, providing fun tourist suggestions, and helping us figure out how to live in another country. The apartment was gorgeous and full of character and had everything we needed to live for a month very comfortably. We especially loved living above the studio and taking part in open studio days and meeting members of Scott's community. Marrickville is a vibrant neighbourhood with great access to shops, restaurants and cuisine from all over the world. We enjoyed the Cook's river path for running and biking. Transit was great with direct trains to the CBD and direct bus to the university. We will miss Marrickville and will have to keep in touch with our lovely hosts!

That's the only photograph I could find. Looks a bit corporate, doesn't it. I'll have to find one of the family or one of me doing something whacky.
We live in the house next door to the building where the apartment is.
Over the years, we've had various people living with us at our rambling property. And now, thanks to Airbnb, we are sharing the place with the world. There are three buildings: the house, the studio/apartment building, the garage where one long term visitor is still living (11 years and counting). There are often interesting people hanging around our place and we'd be keen for you to be part of all that if it suits you.
I work in the city - office job. My wife is far more interesting. She's an artist and does some stuff in the downstairs studio as well as teaching art and design at a university. (I might have to make up some stuff about myself.)
