We had a fantastic time staying with Aulalia (Johannes step-daughter) in central Maputo. The night we arrived, she had cooked a traditional Mozambican dish for us and had a freshly made bed and bath towels waiting. The location is great if you need to work in the center of the city, and is about 8-10 blocks from the eastern or southern coast (and beach). All the rooms have air conditioning, and instead of a bednet, Aulalia provides an anti-mosquito candle to light. While she and the maid would pop in every now and then, we had the place pretty much to ourselves. The maid comes about four times a week, so the place is kept clean, and she will wash clothes for you if you'd like (there is also a washing machine if you'd like to do it yourself). There is space in the kitchen for you to store food, and the apartment has a refrigerator, microwave and toaster. There is also plenty of hot water for the shower. The location is safe, but if you're still concerned about security, you can lock your bedroom door and also lock your valuables in the storage closet inside the bedroom. Taxis can easily be hailed during rush hour in the street out front; otherwise we would call ahead because finding one in the neighborhood was hit-or-miss on the weekends/at night/during the middle of the day. The house is very close to the Ministério da Saúde, near the corner of Salvador Allende and Eduardo Mondlane.
