Thoughtfully designed cottage, self contained but adjoining owner's main house. Lake to the rear, mountains out front. Comfortable bedroom with ensuite bathroom, home cinema/living room with cathedral ceiling and wood burning stove. Kitchen, with spacious conservatory overlooking the lake. Outdoor hot tub also with view over lake. I like my guests to be self-sufficient and you'll find everything included to make your stay easy and comfortable - quality breakfast materials are just the start.

You will not find a more intimate and aesthetically absorbing house in Northern Ireland! It was created by my late wife and I since 2000, we joined the 2 houses with a small link area, which can be shut off for airbnb privacy. We believed strongly that inside and outside spaces should relate seamlessly; outside you will find a wildlife garden unequalled in Co Down (awarded 'best small country garden in NI' by Belfast Telegraph in 2014); inside you may be intrigued by the hand-painted furniture, gold leaf decoration and unpredictable colour schemes. If you are looking for a formula, this is not the place! If you enjoy art, peace, gardens and nature, you will love it here. I have hosted all manner of interesting guests from naturalists to naturists, and everyone loves the feeling of peace and the profusion of colour here.
As a luxury bonus, you can watch HD movies on the 8' screen in your own cinema, or bathe in the privacy of your own outdoor hot tub, heated to a constant 39 degrees (NB advance notice needed and subject to additional £10 payment.)
For those interested in wildlife, a recent moth survey recorded 91 species overnight, inc a Humming Bird Hawk Moth. Butterflies and bees abound in summer, and the pond is heaving with frogs and newts.
The garden is planted in a naturalistic way with wildlife friendly plants, trees, and speciality species. In June, the 'stars' are Laburnum blossom, wisteria right around the house, lupins and oriental poppies. But there is always something in flower most of the year. It is always in motion (and thus always needing attention.)
Hot water in the house is supplied by solar panels, at least when it's light. I rarely have to use the alternative oil heating between April and October.
Breakfast materials (fresh-made bread, eggs, milk, yoghurt, marmalade, cereals) are provided ( I also cater for - indeed excel in - vegetarian and vegan diets), and I can provide a full cooked breakfast and/or full meals at extra cost (vegetarian only). You are welcome to cook whatever you like if you choose to self cater. There is a gas hob + an efficient table top oven (but no microwave) and good pots/utensils. I like to provide basics like oils, sugar, spices, teas, ground coffee etc so you don't need to bring these things.

The cottage is accessed by its own gated drive to the lane (though you will need to reverse out, there is no turning area, hence need for care). Most guests arrive at the main house (No 5) then I can show you how best to park. You can totally secure your house when you go out.

You can interact as you wish, my priority is to give you privacy if you want it. If your'e game, I can be very chatty. Some guests have chosen to come over and have dinner 'at my place' (ie next door), a decision none have regretted. And I can save a lot of time helping with local walks, facilities etc.
There is a little linked area common to your house and mine and I put a blind so we don't have to gawp at each other cooking. And I installed a bell system so you can buzz me like room service when I'm around! You are welcome to explore the garden, in which I may be working. There are many interesting places to sit or eat depending on the time of day.

High speed internet access is always on (choice of wired ethernet or wifi).
2 cats reside in my house and are kept separate unless you'd like them to have access.
Advance notice needed usually for hot tub, plus £10 payment during stay.
A drying frame and iron and board and are all located in your part of the house and guests can use my washing machine for a £4 payment per wash.

No pets I'm afraid, as I have cats, (but who are on my side of the house).
No smoking inside.
There is a cream colour carpet in the living room which is nice but vulnerable, please respect this in footware (some crocs provided but best bring your own or slippers). Shoes can be left in the porch.

Mike's place was a paradise of nature and flowers. The view from the hot tub is amazing and he made us 2 memorable dinners! He was most helpful in recommending sites and areas of interest. We loved this place and will return back in the future!

Mike was a gentlemen. The house has a very unique and warm feel. Mike was on hand if we ever needed him. Thanks.

Stunningly beautiful and very comfortable for a vacation escape. Mike was exceedingly accommodating and even provided us with dinner on the first night because we arrived after the pubs closed.

Mike's cottage is a beautiful and welcoming home. Nestled among trees, it's a cosy, colourful and characterful home, surrounded by a beautiful wildlife garden. There is something to see just around every corner. Just outside the bedroom is a fantastic pond and you can see Clea Lough from the patio and conservatory. It's got all facilities you would need from a great power shower to a kitchen with views over the garden and the lake. There are luxuries like a hot tub, and a home cinema.. as the weather was so good, we did not get to experience the home cinema this time, but watching the night sky from the hot tub was amazing after a day of walking. Adjoining but separate to his own home, there's a bell to call Mike if you need. What was really special was the effort Mike went to, to make us feel at home, from the fresh bread on the counter top, the bedside chocolates, eggs, a range of teas and coffees, cold drinks, and a vase of pretty garden flowers in the bedroom. Best of all was Mike's advice, and the selection of maps and guides. Mike was able to advise us on places to go, from great places to swim to a variety of nature spots. We loved eating outdoors, watching butterflies and bees in such a beautiful nature loving garden. It's very restful and relaxing, and we'd love to come back at another time to get more inspiration for our garden.
Thanks for the great feedback Caitriona, all digested and appreciated, and yes I might cycle round for tea one future day if I'm staying in Tooreeny. Thanks so much, Mike

Just returned from a wonderful stay at Mike's unique and colourful cottage and stunning garden. The addition of the hot tub (extra £10 required to cover heating cost), covered outdoor seating with lakeside views where we had all our meals and the incredible projector screen theatre made this a really special getaway in a beautiful setting. Mike and Elke are lovely and friendly hosts and helped us settle in really quickly, even the cats made us feel welcome!Enjoying the property in all weathers and times of day, we didn't want to leave and are already looking to plan a return trip.
Thanks Diane, so glad you found everything good and look forward to hearing your laughter again. Sorry about the name mix up! Best wishes Mike

This is a tranquill haven full of objet trouvé, with quirky collections spanning many of the owner's interests but including ceramics, embroidery and a petit garden landscape. It is full of calm vibrant colour and architectural form. A great place to rest, to read, and maybe even meditate. Mike was on hand but we didn't need to buzz him as everything was in its place and had been efficiently explained. Mike is a calm experienced host. We were blessed by fine weather and one highlight for me was lying in a (spotless) outdoor hot tub while looking out across delightful herbaceous planting set at eye level while the bees shuttled between flowers on their flight path. Even while nestled in the tub, the nearby lake with its crannog (?) is still just visible beyond the various spaces of this secluded garden. It is a good location to explore an area which has much interest and natural beauty within a few mile radius, but to take full advantage be sure to spend some time here doing nothing much...
Thanks for such a richly detailed feedback Stewart! Welcome back any wishes Mike

This is a most interesting and welcoming holiday let. Garden was fascinating- lots of interest. The bed was most comfortable and we greatly enjoyed Mike's freshly baked loaf and other breakfast treats. The Home Cinema was great and the hot tub was an added bonus (NB there is an additional charge for this). Mike is an interesting host. Lovely country lanes nearby to enjoy if you have bicycles and plenty of nice places to drive to, to enjoy this corner of Co Down

I live in the country outside Killyleagh, I am a photographer and musician and gardener now. My late wife Ruth was a garden designer and extraordinary artist and together we created a very unusual house and garden (for Northern Ireland). We liked world cinema, unusual gardens and anything that brings a smile to the heart; widely travelled, most recently to Morocco, Italy, Portugal and Australia.
