My first time using AirBnB was nothing too surprising. Location: Was perfect. Close to everything. Apt: Apt is above a small kebab restaurant, with separate entrance available. Good - Bed and towels seemed clean, decent bed, water bottle in fridge was nice. Bathroom was pretty clean, but separated from room by only a curtain. Seemed private. Wifi worked well, TV with local channels, air conditioning worked. Bad -Floors were dirty (there was a used condom on the floor.. I know, gross), No shampoo for shower. Somewhat dusky (moist/dark), and had sewage smell occasionally. (As in many cheap apts, they run the toilet line with the sink drain line so the sewage gas comes up the sink). Although private, walls are fairly thin, so noise is dependent on your neighbor (i think there was one apt adjacent and one below). Host: Male family member was the one that we interacted with who was very nice and friendly. Overall: with exception to the dirty floor and sewage smell from sink (very common in apts), my wife and i enjoyed our stay in istanbul. Recommended for people that use their room for just rest and sleep, and spend the rest of their time out and about.
Room was clean, quiet, comfortable, and within very short walking distance of major attractions such as Aya Soyfa, the Blue Mosque, and Arasta Bazaar. There is a restaurant downstairs (we never heard them) and their food is delicious. The tram is only a 5 - 10 minute walk away and provides easy access to the rest of the city. We loved Sultanahmet and the rest of Istanbul. The room is excellent value for money. Thank you Ayse!
The communication with this host was always good, but on the actual day of check-in, the host wasn't at the apartment at the agreed time. But then the landlord came himself to arrange the room for us (and we got put into a more spacious room instead). The apartment is located above a restaurant in a great area for exploring all the historic sites.
