'Alpenblick' - Spectacular Alpine views in the Heart of the High Country.
Great base to explore the Alpine National Park, the Victorian skifields, historic villages and wineries or to just enjoy the magnificent views from our lounge, deck or patio.
Our modern home has spectacular views over the Victorian Alps and surrounding foothills.
Tawonga is located in the pretty Kiewa Valley only 6km from Mount Beauty which offers walking tracks, cycling experiences, restaurants, cafes, a brewery and shops. Within a 40 minute drive you are in Falls Creek and on the Bogong High Plains, an amazing part of the Alpine National Park. Explore the area on a scenic drive, on your bicycle or go for a mountain hike. Only 10km from our place starts the challenging hike up to the top of Mount Bogong, the highest mountain of the Victorian Alps. If you are into fishing the Kiewa River and the dams on the High Plains are known for their trout fishing. The area has become a mecca for road and mountainbike riders. The historic towns of Yackandandah and Beechworth and the wineries in the area make for relaxing sightseeing and culinary trips.
We offer a comfortable double room with a winter or summer quilt, linen, towels, wardrobe space and TV/DVD. A bathroom with shower and a separate toilet are for your exclusive use. In winter we provide an electric heater in your room. We hardly ever use our air conditioning in summer because the Kiewa Valley provides us with a refreshing afternoon valley breeze nearly every day which cools down the house. We provide onsite parking.
We are avid bushwalkers and Iris works as a ranger in the National Park; we are happy to chat to you and tell you all about our favourite spots and walks. We will provide you with maps and information about the area including local and national park walking tracks.
We do speak English and German and love to share our knowledge of this beautiful country with international visitors as well as our fellow Ozzie travellers.
The kitchen is available for breakfast and light lunch/refreshment as well as tea and coffee making at any time.
We are happy for you to share our open plan lounge room with us. Or you can sit on the deck and marvel at the fantastic views across the mountains and foothills and enjoy a drink or coffee.
You are also invited to use our downstairs patio which features a gas BBQ which is available for your use. You will probably ponder how a German Strandkorb, beach chair, made it all the way to this Australian patio but that’s a discussion over a nice drink.
Both Nick and I enjoy good company and conversation. We would love to share this beautiful part of the world and very unique part of Australia with you.
If you have any questions about the national parks, as a ranger I am more than happy to try and answer them. There is so much to explore in our area, we love to help you with any information you are interested in. Just ask…
We are avid travellers ourselves and love exploring the world and Australia and always interested in learning about your travelling experiences. If you are a German traveller: Wir sprechen deutsch und Iris freut sich immer ihr deutsch mal ein wenig aufzufrischen.
But if you feel like you just want to enjoy the place and some time for yourself, we do respect your privacy.
We have our own 'waste water treatment plant' because we are not connected to sewage. It is a sustainable system and works on the basis of a worm farm. Normal soap is too harsh for the system so please note we cannot use soap. We are supplying shower gel as an alternative but if you have your own preferred showergel please bring some with you.
No shoes in the house please. In winter the floors can get cold with some freezing temperatures outside. We are supplying guest slippers but if you prefer your own maybe pack some house slippers.
Please clean up after yourself
My partner Nick and I are living in the Alpine Area of Australia, in a small rural township called Tawonga, near Mount Beauty and the ski resort of Falls Creek and at the foot of Mount Bogong, the highest mountain in Victoria. I am working as a national park ranger in the Alpine National Park and Nick enjoys working at the local community radio station and helping out in many volunteer organisations in town. We love the outdoors especially hiking and canoeing and have always enjoyed travelling the world. Originally I am from Germany but I made Australia my home in 1999. Nick has gotten around Australia, he lived in Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne before I dragged him into the country to live in and around national parks.
