Robert was very welcoming to his special home. He accommodated my very last minute booking, I stayed a few nights in the single room upstairs (I travelled alone) and then the remainder in the room on this listing. The neighbourhood is great - very well located, lots of amenities and great transport connections a short walk away. I enjoyed learning about the struggle with the government selling the historical buildings (like Robert's) in the area to private interests who'll knock down the buildings for redevelopment, and the public outcry on this. The renovation work Robert is doing to the property is a huge job, but very rewarding because of the historical accuracy and Robert's dedication. At my time of visiting the ground floor is done, and is rather impressive. The stay isn't quite like any other airbnb I've been to, a unique combination of regal, low-key, and 'rough-and-ready"! The beds were comfy, the facilities old-fashioned (as you can expect), the location premium for tourism, and my experience of my stay was very positive. I recommend this to anyone curious for a unique and memorable experience in Sydney.

Experience: Just OK experience. Interesting stay, but not a 4 or 5 star accommodation. House in the middle of the renovations so couldn’t use the public spaces properly. The house was not very clean and tidy. Location is amazing no doubt. Sorry to say but not worth the amount of money charged for the room unfortunately. Would appreciate if you update the profile to advise that the house is under renovations and stop taking in visitors till the house is back. May be Ok for students or backpackers. The Host: Very kind and excellent host. Robert has a unique and interesting collection of antiques and the story of the house is amazing. He was very kind to assist with the luggage up to the room and provided very sensible advice and suggestions about local travel and housing in Sydney. Some very interesting conversations about AU politics too in the midst. Robert was very kind to allow me to use the ironing board and iron when needed and even offered the use of the washing machine. The Room: - The room was good. The bed-sheets were clean and ironed. Pillows and bed were comfortable. The towels were clean. There was very little disturbance even though the house is under renovations. The house key is very unique and it felt like we are provided with a key to a treasure chest or something (truly amazing). The room gets very stuffy so opening the windows and the fan really helped but if you leave the windows open cockroaches and house cricket were flying into the room and crawling all over the bed and into the suitcases. Noise from trains overhead on the bridge until midnight or so. I found the Rug in the room was very dirty. The House: - Although I didn't use the kitchen facilities; due to the renovations, there were lots of cockroaches in the kitchen which was not pleasant at all. The house itself very dirty and felt as if it has not been cleaned for months. Guessing the renovations impacted a bit on the cleanliness of the house. The bathroom: - The bathroom very extremely disappointing. Functional but very unhygienic. Pubic hair everywhere in the bath and near the toilet. Looked as if it wasn’t cleaned for months. Sorry but would suggest you close the listing for a while till you have the renovations completed fully in the house.

All listings make it very clear that conservation of this house is an on going event and only one area at a time is ever undertaken so as not to unduly inconvenience occupants. It is the guest's responsibility to read the listing and ask questions first if uncertain about suitability not base comments on fanciful assumptions. No where has it ever been claimed to be a 4 or 5 star accommodation and indeed Amit appers to over look the fact that this is definitely not a hotel but shared accommodation in a private home. 5 star accommodation is availbale around the corner at the Hyatt Hotel where room prices start at $850 per night for a basic room so if Amit is unable to afford his champagne taste on a beer budget it is unreasonable to express dissatisfaction for the very modest price his private room cost with large digital TV, queen size posturepaedic bed and sofa which also includes full access to a very well appointed gourmet kitchen, fully equipped laundry, courtyard, balcony and most of the house other than other private rooms. The only area in which conservation works were in progress was the formal breakfast room which hardly constitutes all public areas, in fact it being a room seldom used by guests anyway who invariably prefer to eat in the completed colonial kitchen, balcony overlooking the Harbour, formal dining room or various facilities within the garden courtyard. Cockroaches and the like are an integral part of life in Sydney especially in summer and cannot be eradicated from any building as they are insects which fly and can easily gain ingress through open windows. They are a common sight in the street given the age of the area and its traditional old stone buildings not compliant with current building ordinances. Accommodation in a 5 star hotel with air conditioning and hermetically sealed windows minimises this risk, an option not available in an historic building of such significance as is this particlar home where the Government will not permit the installation of air conditioning or or any interference with the original fabric of the building. This was fully explained to Amit so if he has no comprehension of these constraints he should not have entertained the notion of staying in an historic building in the most important historic precinct in the entire country. Amit's room, like all other rooms are thoroughly cleaned before new occupancy with fresh bed linen washed and pressed for each new guest. The rug was professionally cleaned less than 2 months ago and was perfectly clean when handed over to this guest. Being of exceptionally deep velvet pure wool pile supplied by Stockwell Carpets of London, I suspect Amit has mistaken this luxury pile showing natural shadowing by nature of its thickness as being 'dirty' which it most certainly was not. Clearly unfamiliar with this level of luxury. The bathroom is cleaned regularly and to suggest it is unhygienic is an outrageous claim based presumably on the fact that it is the original built by the Governent in 1916 however recently fitted with new toilet pan and hot water service to replace the old gas fired water heater. Such comments are based on ignorance rather than fact. Each guest is responsible to leave the kitchen and bathroom in the same condition in which they found it. Outrageous and exagerated claim that 'pubic' hair everywhere in the bathroom, quite untrue and most probably his own if he did find any. This is scheduled for major upgrading and refurbishment when the appropriate approvals from the Heritage Branch of the Department of Planning and the Environment, Local Council and other statutory Authorities have been obtained. Amit had the opportunity to inspect and reject this accommodation prior to moving in as he was shown extensively through the premises upon arrival so to raise these issues now, after the event, is malicious and unwarranted. Altogether a most disappointing response from a person who clearly has little appreciation or discernment of cultural values and expectations not matched by a realistic budget for this unique location in Sydney.

Location great. Host is fascinating and very willing to interact, yet give you privacy. Interesting historic property, but currently under renovation in public parts of house. Bath a little scary to look at, but functional. Some noise from trains overhead on the bridge, but they don't run all night. Very interesting stay, but don't expect 5 star accommodation until reno completed.

No listing in this house claims to be 5 star accommodation nor will it ever be as it is a private home not a hotel which seems often to be overlooked. If an original bathroom of 1916 installed by the Government of the day is considered scary, then I would suggest it reflects a life cocooned from reality, I make no apology for the piece of history this building represents and the programme in hand to ensure this remains so for the benefit of future generations. This building will never be a private hotel, the overriding objective being to carefully peel back the layers of damage and neglect for over a hundred years and restore the building to its former status of the residence of a gentleman of substance in a growing colonial British outpost. Any one unable to appreciate this objective and what it entails to achieve same is clearly an inappropriate guest and should seek more commonplace accommodation of which there is plenty to choose albeit at a much more elevated price.

This was my first time using Airbnb, and what a brilliant way to start. Rob was a great host, welcoming me into Sydney with a text ensuring that he would be at home for my arrival - this is such a rare privilege! The room was exactly what I required for 6 weeks; the bed and couch comfortable, the hot water quick to come through and there's plenty of it. I did not use the kitchen facilities, but they are there, and top-of-the-range. There's a washing machine too - all perfect. Many reviews here mention the renovations - and they are ongoing, but the results are astounding and well worth the the slight inconvenience of noise at 8am. Rob is very concious of this, and will be sure to check in with you. The location could not be better. At the northern end of George Street close to STC, Circular Quay, and right in the heart of The Rocks - what more could you ask for as a Sydney experience? I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Rob's place to anyone, he is a sincere and caring gentleman who is a wonderful host.
