Charming, newly renovated house for two called "The Bungalhigh" with bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and wrap around porch, located on a swimming cove with view of Blue Hill Mountain, a half mile from Blue Hill village. Pet-friendly, Cable TV, Internet.
Nearby is a 2nd cottage, the Bungalow, which is rented out separately and simultaneously as the Bungalhigh. Guests renting the Bungalow must walk in front of the Bungalhigh to get to the Bungalow and shares the yard and cove....
Private swimming cove with campfire, water view, mountain view, island view, pet-friendly.
It's a one-bedroom cottage called "The Bungalhigh," located on a family compound with comfortable Queen bed and ensuite bathroom, plus kitchen, living room with view and wrap around deck. Although the living room has two couches that do not convert to beds, we can supply up to two LL Bean Camp Cots for family parties of four.
If you are a party of four adults, we can more comfortably accommodate you in the other rental house on the property, listed on AirBNB as "Bungalow on Ocean with Swimming Cove in Blue Hill," known as the Bungalow, which has three bedrooms....
The Bungalhigh is located very close to this other rental house, the Bungalow, so guests need to be warned that renters in the Bungalow walk in front of the Bungalhigh to get to their cottage and share the yard, kayaks, cove, parking lot, barbecue, and telephone with guests.
Deep water out front for mooring a yacht; a private mooring can be arranged with advance notice; this house has an up-to-date Maine Lodging License.
Two kayaks, a rowing dinghy, life jackets, Cable TV, Wifi internet, mosquito screens on all the windows, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable Queen-size bed. Fans. Portable electric heater.
There is mackerel fishing from the point; seals, ducks, loons, wheeling birds in the bay...
A 12 foot tide empties the cove out front for half the day.... Excellent swimming, but tide is important.
House is located well off the main road....safe for children and pets. The property offers an ideal situation for pets.
The Queen Bed is pre-made for arrival with 100% cotton, white sheets....
Besides the Bungalow and Bungalhigh, there are two additional houses belonging to family on the property, which mostly sit empty.... Our cousins will not use their house through the woods during the summer of 2016; my sister Libby owns the two-story "studio" on the other side of the Bungalhigh....she does not live there, but she does make brief visits throughout the summer and fall....
Most houses in Blue Hill have kept their 1950s bathroom and kitchen fixtures. We've tried not to modernize the Bungalhigh too much in keeping with the style of the other houses in town....
Our Welcome Kit contains pamphlets on things to do in the area, descriptions of the best restaurants, locations of nearby scenic walks, farms, and driving tours with addresses for GPS navigation to find them....
The nice thing about renting a house in Blue Hill as opposed to Stonington or Mount Dessert, for instance, is that Blue Hill is located equidistant between both places, which are on opposite sides of us, yet Blue Hill is not congested with traffic or touristy like Mount Dessert is, nor too far away from other quaint towns in the area that Stonington is. In Blue Hill you can just as easily visit Castine, Belfast, Rockland, and Stonington as you can Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and even Lubec, places that offer a lot of charm that you would otherwise miss if you rented in Stonington or in Mount Dessert. Blue Hill also offers activities that are not touristy, such as farms, granges, museums, trails, beaches, and back to the earth eateries.
We hope you will scroll down beyond the reviews and biography on this page to the map below, where "thumb tacks" point out on a map highlights of this area to give you a feel of this place. Choosing the right town to vacation in is just as important as choosing the right house, and we hope we have given you enough facts to make the right choice. Personally, I'm all about doing the research for you in advance, so when you get here, because you've read the research below, you feel you've done everything already, (or at least you can put your finger on how to accomplish what you want to do fast), so you have plenty of time to also just sit on the porch and relax.
Guests have access to the swimming cove, the orchard-come-septic tank in back, and the point to the left of the Bungalow (in front of Libby's two-story studio), where there is a bench on the point and several picnic tables, offering a nice place to think and to ponder. There's a fire pit.... you can have a campfire out there if you like....
Guests check themselves in. I live two miles away with my mother, Julie Nicholson, who owns the property. Believing that guests prefer privacy, I come over only if something is needed, and then I am happy to do so.
The house key unlocks the bedroom door, not the front door.... The television in the bedroom turns itself on after a power failure (!!). Garden lights are on a dusk to dawn timer....
Check-in is after 3 pm; Check-out is at 10 am. If you need alterations to these times, please let us know, so we can inform the cleaning personel. Often we have same-day turnarounds.
Please be careful of fire. Please use the fire extinguisher if necessary. Build fires on the beach below the high tide mark, and if you are having a campfire on the point, please use the fire pit. Roots travelling under ground on fire pose an enormous fire hazard for this grandfathered property.
Please turn the porch light and overhead kitchen light off at night. The light shines right into the bedroom of the nearby Bungalow.
Smoking is allowed on the porch.
Pets are welcome. Perhaps it is best to leave dogs outside until they are dry and drape sheets over the couches in case dogs jump up at night.
As high tide leaves no space on the shore, please tie the dinghy to a tree after each use. Please ship oars, so they do not float away in the rain..... Lift kayaks onto the bank when not in use and turn upside down with paddles and lifejackets on top. Lifejackets are required by law. Please be weary of fog.
The old row boat has very little interior flotation, and it will sink if not handled properly ; please use it but be careful...for safety sake.
Please be careful of the slippery moss on the rocks on the beach and avoid those "wet" areas.
Endangered species plants (lady slippers) grow on the point near the shore to the left of the house. Please stay on path.
Please do not park in front of our cousins house with the red trim. They visit in August.
Trash is placed in the pump house near the parking lot in bins.
The lantern garden lights are on automatic, dusk to dawn timers....
If there are any questions during your stay, please do not hesitate to telephone or email me. I am a mile away.
Enjoy your stay!
I am the daughter of Julie P. Nicholson, who owns the property (Sea Captain's House is owned by Christie Long)... Passionate about history, Blue Hill, country living, family, and pets, I am happy to live in Blue Hill full time, a dream finally come true....
