Experience life in one of the largest, privately owned ecological reserves in Central America, teeming with wildlife and natural beauty.

This small, private boutique community has been designed using green building concepts, native fallen hardwoods and natural stone.

Casa Colina was designed and built to blend into it's jungle surroundings. Boasting 16' vaulted cane ceilings with large overhangs that providing shade from sun and rain showers, you truly feel like you are part of the surrounding natural setting

Casa Colina has 2 master bedroom suites, 2 1/4 bathrooms with high ceilings, cool polished concrete floors, and a state of the art screen system that allows for fresh air to flow through the home constantly. Both large bedrooms contain beautiful stone, en-suite bathrooms, large storage spaces, and views of either the ocean or jungle. In keeping with our eco-consciousness, the piping hot water in both bathrooms is heated by the sun with our solar hot water system. Both bedrooms rooms are well appointed with fine linens, pillows and comfortable beds.

The homes ideal position on a ridge allows the cool breezes to flow through the house both day and night. Boundaries between indoors and outdoors blend when sliding walls open to a large patio with ocean and jungle views. Polished concrete floors keep the house cool, even in the heat of the day.

Enjoy a swim in a shared infinity edge pool overlooking the pacific and jungle terrain, just a short walk from your door step.

This home enjoys the benefits of secure private parking and 24 hour security in a locked, gated community. Cleaning and pool service is included, laundry machines in home for small additional fee.

This house is perfect for honeymooners, families of four, one or two couples looking for a get away in one of the worlds most beautiful locations, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Monkeys visit, sloths laze and at the right time of year and with a little bit of luck, humpback whales can be seen from the house as they are arriving in the warm waters of the Nicaraguan Pacific to nurse their young.

A four wheel drive high clearance vehicle is required and recommended for accessing not only Casa Colina, but the majority of the beaches north and south of San Juan del Sur. We are located 12km from town on country dirt roads, and as the Balcones community is perched on a hill from the main road a 4WD vehicle will make your stay much more enjoyable!

We loved staying in The Balcones houses. It was secluded but it was a real experience of jungle life. So if you like nature and beauty and access to gorgeous beaches it is a great place to stay. Elsi was our guide to the home and how to get there. She is so knowledgeable and friendly. We decided to take our surf lessons from her as she is a professional surfer and it was an invaluable experience. It changed my life. She is wvery. It as kind fun and smart and chill. Everything you need in a friendly local who speaks tremendous English and is prompt responsive and a fun cool surf teacher. I so recommend her. I can't emphasize it enough.

Great home, we enjoyed our stay. Will note hay the home is not %100 sealed off so bugs will get in.
Hi Sarah! Thank you for taking the time to write a review. With that walls sliding open like the do in the pictures it is definitely likely a few bugs will make their way into the home based on our jungle location. Life in the tropics! Thanks for being great guests.

Casa Colina is one of a kind. The drive is probably the worst part, but after 2 or 3 times we maneuvered the dirt roads pretty well. The home is unique and modern and the shared pool is a great addition. We were told there were scorpions but fortunately didn't see any, but we were lucky to see monkeys our last morning right at the front door. Elsi is a huge help as she is easily communicable and was able to provide us with recommended activities in SJDS. Great way to end our stay in Nicaragua.

Traveling as a couple, we considered staying at more communal hotels but opted for this house due to its privacy and quiet location. It's beautifully situated over the beaten path and immersed in the monkeys and the trees—perfect! The main town areas (Maderas, San Juan del Sur) are 15- to 20-minute drives away, so if you need more activity, it's also within reach. There is also a private beach nearby, so you could opt to be a shut-in, if preferred. The house is well-architected, with a lot (a lot!) of breeze passing through, and lovely structure. This particular house is close to its neighbor, so please note if you'd like max privacy. The pool is also shared across a few houses and a couple of minutes walk away. To book and check-in is easy—everyone involved is very communicative and helpful. Cleaning staff also visited while we were there and were similarly kind. If you're looking for the beach with a quiet, private experience, the Balcones homes are a great option.

Casa Colina is as described. You will definitely want a real 4x4 vehicle mostly once you get into the private community. A regular car will be unable to make the climb. But you will need all four wheels. Parking at the entrance and walking is something we initially considered but decided to go with a Toyota Hilux 4x4. The walk would have been longer and more uphill than we would have liked. The house is beautiful and looks just like the pictures. The kitchen has all the pots, pans, silverware, plates, and grilling utensils that you will need. We ended up picking up some seasonings and oil for cooking but there was soap and scrubs there. Towels and sheets were clean and there was also a set of beach towels for our use. The shower had ample hot water for showers. Be aware of the other reviews. When we arrived there were a couple of scorpions and a large spider. We were told that they weren't dangerous but even then they were the only visitors we had during the week aside from the howler monkeys that were climbing on the trees right outside the windows. If you need AC to sleep, this is not the place for you. For all but the last two nights, the wind was gusting through the house and the location up on the ridge made the temperature cool enough for us to be comfortable. But be aware that when the wind is gusting you may feel like a little pig with the wolf trying to blow the house down. The last couple of nights the temperature was cooler so it was fine. During the day it's cool enough to be comfortable in the house though we didn't stay in the house during the days. The private community has private access to the beach which you can drive to and park. This is a very nice secluded beach. We only saw a couple people here and they were usually other people staying in the community. This beach is a short 5 minute walk to Playa Maderas, one of the hot surf spots. We did surf there everyday and there is a place on the beach to rent surfboards for 10$ a day. The last couple of days we went to Playa Hermosa just south of San Juan Del Sur. Small fee per person to get in but well worth it with the accommodations available and sprawling beach. You can also surf and rent boards here. Overall the house and location are great if you want to get away and be secluded but feel close enough to town to get some nightlife. The drive is about 30 minutes but it's short. The dirt roads are what makes it take longer than you might expect.

This house is a beautiful open Japanese style house with a generous amount of screened in windows all around, cool polished concrete floors, and two spacious bedrooms that have large sliding doors for privacy with adjoining bathrooms in each, and a separate half bath, large kitchen, outdoor patio with a grill, and wonderful views. This house is on the end of a line of 4-5 closely set houses in the private community. On the other end of the line of houses is where you will find the pictured pool. The house is quite remote from SJDS, high in the hills, which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the type of vacation sought. Gabriela at a local real estate agency gave us a full orientation to the house, along with leading us to it on the day of check in. Laura was a generous host who was very responsive to our requests. While we were there, there was an eight hour local power outage. This house comes with an inverter system which kept the power on at the house, after about 30 minutes of maintenance of the system by property staff till power was restored by the local utility.

The house is about a 20-30 minute drive from San Juan Del Sur along a bumpy dirt road. You will need a 4 wheel drive. Once you are there- it's an amazing oasis with a spectacular view! The house is beautifully crafted and a swimming pool is steps away from the house. We loved the open air feel and the grill. Gabby and Elsi met us in town and took us to the local markets and directed us to the house. We hired Laura to prep a meal for us that was out of this world amazing. Gabby and Elsi were also wonderful contacts and helped us out- we had need for medical assistance and they made sure our family was looked after and helped out. I hope to return to the house one day!

We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work (Joel is a photographer and Laura a chef)- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet-current location is California though we are Canadians (Toronto in fact!). While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home - I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in San Juan del Sur with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
