We had a great time here.
The house is quaint and cozy, of traditional exterior and bang up-to-date interior, surrounded by turf-roofed cottages, yet with reliable 4G wifi. For location, we really couldn’t have hoped for better: it’s 5 minutes (and no more) from the long-distance coach station, the ferry terminal and a number of small top-class fish restaurants, for which I’d advise booking ahead before you get here. Two minutes down the road lies the Café Natur, and the tourist information office, the main bus stop for town buses, a very well-presented supermarket and the main pedestrianized area are surely less than 10 minutes’ stroll away, as are the other side of the harbor and the Tinganes administrative area.
Before coming, I’d been concerned about temperatures in Torshavn, and arrived with piles of warm clothing. While this was useful out of doors, inside, I needn’t have worried. Every single window is double-glazed, the central heating has seemingly industrial-strength capability, and thermostats on all the radiators meant we could set each room to our own desired temperature. Mine delivered an all-night toasty temperature I can’t even get at home. It was a real pleasure to come back to the aroma of a warm, cozy, wooden cottage after a long day out.
As for other facilities, the shower and bathroom are fine, there’s a washing machine, a well-equipped kitchen (more than enough plates, dishes, cups, and cutlery to go around), a fridge (but no freezer), a slimline dishwasher, the obligatory kettle and (I assume) induction hobs, though we didn’t use them. The décor is pleasing, too – a cozy Nordic minimalism making the most of the cottage’s wooden construction and airy ambience.
We got a head start in our planning with the town maps and larger-scale maps and guides which our hostess had left in the cottage; this really helped us get our bearings on arrival.
For those who might be bothered by such things, it’s quiet. We could hear the church bells and the whistles of the ferries with the windows open, but there are no busy roads within earshot.
I’ve seen a comment about a bed being thin. Well, this is a genuine old Torshavn cottage, and yes, my bed was under the slope of the roof, so I had to remember not to erupt vertically first thing in the morning. Still, lengthwise and widthwise, it was perfectly adequate, and I’m over 6’. I had no bad nights at all here.
To boot, it’s all spotlessly clean, and our hostess was great, replying very quickly to all my messages. Full marks.
