Welcome to our new little house, a light-filled private space surrounded by greenery, but just a 10 minute walk from downtown Ellsworth. It's a great spot for 1 or 2 guests to try out living in a nicely designed small (but not tiny!) house. You can easily walk to downtown... the library, shops, restaurants and pubs, the Grand theater. The house sits above the head of tide on the Union River, so from the deck you can hear the sound of falling water and frequently see eagles and osprey overhead.
The house has five huge windows looking out on a grassy clearing and woods, and a deck with a view of Mountain Rock (a little hill!) across the river. Glimpses of the dam and the river when leaves are off the trees. The house is newly built, incorporating some of the nice features from the big house that once stood here - the big windows, steeply pitched roof, and the delightful sun porch. We've added a private deck facing the river, a heat pump for summer AC and winter warmth, a tiled walk-in shower, and a Murphy bed (standard queen size) to make the most of the small footprint (a bit less than 500 square feet). You will have access to the main floor (ground floor) of the house, but not the upper level, which is currently unfinished. There is no TV, but there is free Wi-Fi and a projector for watching Netflix, Amazon Video, or HBO Now through an Amazon Fire Stick. We also have a Chromebook laptop you can use, or you can connect your own iPhone, iPad, or laptop to the projector to watch your own content. The kitchen is well equipped, with toaster, coffeemaker, microwave, counter top oven, etc. If any kitchen item is missing, we are right across the drive and can probably provide it!
Guest Access... we have installed an August door lock and keypad, and we will provide you when you book with a 4 digit code for locking and unlocking the front door, so you will be able to arrive anytime without having to get keys.
If you are interested, Sally has a beautiful perennial garden at the big house where we live next door that you are welcome to visit any time. From our back yard, you can walk a few steps to see the 70 foot high dam on the Union River. A few more steps bring you to a nice swimming spot on Leonard Lake (we provide water shoes to wear if you swim, since the lake bottom may harbor sharp freshwater mussel shells or pieces of glass).
We enjoy meeting new people, and live in the big house just across the driveway from the little house if you need anything; but with the keypad entry you can let yourself in even if we are not home when you arrive. We are always happy to help with suggestions for restaurants, activities, places to shop and places to see... just ask. You can contact us during your stay by phone, text or email.
We just ask that you treat our house as you would your own!
Please be careful if walking near the cliff edge below the clearing. This is why this property is not suitable for young children.
The house is rented for a maximum of 2 guests only... no more than this, please.
I am retired from the postal service (I was a rural carrier), but gig once or twice a week as a jazz tenor sax player. My wife, Sally, was born in Brazil of American parents, so speaks fluent Portuguese as well as English. We both have travelled quite a bit in France, Spain, Italy, Turkey and through Mexico, Central and South America. In 2012, we traded houses and cat-sitting duties with two French women we had met here in Maine when we rented them our summer place in 2010. They enjoyed Maine, using our home as a base, while we spent a month at their home in southwest France, mostly touring the many villages and vineyards within easy driving distance from their home town. We spent 30 years in New Hampshire before moving to Maine about 17 years ago, all of that time living in the country, raising a lot of our food, keeping goats, chickens, horses, and always cats. Currently have three cats, our dear friends. My wife is still a great gardener... I help out here and there in the garden, but it is mostly her! We love to cook and eat out, hiking, traveling, and music (for me, especially jazz).
