Oberer Stephansberg is one of the most sought after streets in the centre of Bamberg. Located on top of the hill, just 5 minutes walk from the ancient city centre, you get beautiful views across the town.

You will be living in a world heritage protected property, a 12th century home that was rebuilt after the 30 years war and that used to serve as a Curia, the home of a senior priest of the Catholic Church. We have had this home for 40 years and it’s been recently opened for visitors.

You enter into a majestic hallway with a grand staircase that leads up to the three bedrooms. At the end of the hallway, under the stairs, there is a small cloakroom for coats and a toilet for guests. To the right of the entrance is the kitchen-diner. The kitchen has a round dining table that can be folded up or seat up to 6 people on the red chairs if dragged into the centre. The kitchen boasts a new Bosh dishwasher, a hob, oven, fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster and Nespresso machine. Any size pot or pan can be found in the various cupboards. The pantry, just off the kitchen has a washing machine, dryer, freezer and shelves with crockery and cutlery for 10 people. There is space to hang the laundry that you do not want to dry in the machine.

At the top of the stairs, turning left, you enter a small entrance that leads to a suite with two bedrooms and a bathroom. Both bedrooms (20 sqm each) have two large single beds that can be pushed together giving you the choice of twin or double bed arrangements. The master bedroom has wall to wall cupboards and the second bedroom also has a large wardrobe. There are armchairs/chairs in both rooms to relax. The decor of the rooms has been kept with the style of the house, the ceilings still boast the 16th century decorations. The large windows (4 in one room and 3 in the other) overlook the quiet street and beyond the church steeples of Bamberg. Each of the rooms has a kettle so that you do not have to return downstairs for a cup of tea.

The blue marble bathroom has two washbasins, a shower, a toilet and ample storage space behind a sliding mirror. A cupboard holds the fresh towels and the hair dryer.

Upon request, access to a living room may be given. The room has a sofa bed, a desk, shelves with books, two small armchairs, a small table and a TV with DVD/CD player. The sofa bed can accommodate 2 extra guests. There is also a second bathroom opposite the third bedroom for the guests that stay there. The bathroom has two cupboards for clothes, a shower, basin and toilet, all in white.


Please note: The weekly price is pro-rata daily price and as a bonus for guests staying longer that one week, free cleaning would be included weekly in the same price. Stay longer and get free cleaning.

We keep our prices affordable by charging on per bedroom use. Prices are based on 1 bedroom use for 2 people; 2 bedroom use for 3-4 people; and 3 bedroom use for 5-6 people.

For 2 people using separate bedrooms, enquiries must come in 3 people (necessitating 2nd bedroom use) and hence different price.

Reality check
Please remember that you are living in a property that is many centuries old. It was fully renovated 40 years ago, but not everything will work as well as in a modern flat. The kitchen is cosy, but old (the extractor for example looks a bit dates) and one of the 2 taps in the main bathroom has low water pressure (but there are 2 basins and only one has this problem). Please also note that not the full house is accessible to guests. An elderly lady used to live in a separate flat on the first floor. Until early June 2017 one of her relatives might still access her flat. But it is very unlikely that you will meet anyone. None of this will detract from fully enjoying the property.


The two great advantages of this property is that we offer off-street parking in the large courtyard next to the house (2 cars) and that in the summer you can request to have exclusive access to a very large garden with a terrace. The terrace has a large stone table and 6 chairs and there is also a coffee table with four large reclining seats under a large parasol. In winter the garden is not in use.


Living on the Stephansberg is a real treat. 4 min downhill is a baker that opens at 7 am and produces Bamberg's best bread and croissants. A beautiful cafe, actually calling itself 'tearoom' (Teestube) is also only 2 min away on the Pfalplaetzchen. The world famous beer gardens 'Wilde Rose' and 'Spezialkeller' are just minutes further up the hill. In summer you can beat the crowds and always get a bite to eat with your pint of beer. If you don't fancy the walk up, you just have to cross the street to have a beer or a nice glass of wine at the 'Stoerenkeller', a small elegant pub only the locals know about. Grocery shopping can be done down town at one of the centrally located supermarkets (less than 10 min walk downhill) or at the market that is located opposite the beautiful St Michael's church. To get there you walk past all the antique shops and through the world famous old town hall located on the bridge.

If you fancy a walk by the river you just have to coss the street and go down the steps at the corner of the 'Stoerenkeller', or you can walk halfway down the Stephansberg and turning right get into the local woods (Hain) by crossing the St Nepomuk's bridge. Doing this allows you to go past 'Eckerts', a great restaurant that produces its own bread, jams and croissants in the 'Genusswerkstatt'. If you get a chance catch a free organ concert in the cathedral (Dom) or a full concert with the world rebound Bamberger Symphoniker. Everything is just minutes away on foot.

Once you have seen the multiple churches, the old and new residence, the rose garden next to the cathedral (Dom), the various museums and explored the various beer gardens, you might want to explore the surroundings of Bamberg by driving to the fortress at Coburg or going and eating fresh trout in the Fraenkische Schweiz. Since you have parking at home, the car can be left behind when you explore Bamberg on foot and taken out for day trips.


CHECKIN CHECKOUT: Our check-in time is at an agreed time between 3 pm and 5 pm. We try to be as flexible as possible and if you arrive early and the flat is free and prepared we can check you in. Our usual check out time is between 10 and 10.30am. Again if we do not have an arrival that day or we do not need immediate access to prepare the accommodation for the next guest we allow you to check out at your leisure that day. Our meet and greet service is included in the price for check-ins between 3pm and before 6pm.

All check-ins include an hour of waiting beyond the time you quoted giving you sufficient time to get to our property, delays beyond an hour are chargeable at €20 an hour. We understand that you may be delayed because of measures beyond your influence and we are happy to provide you a letter/receipt for additional costs borne by yourself for insurance purposes.

Check-ins before 9am and after 6pm will need to be pre-agreed and incur a separate surcharge as follows. Please do take this into account before you book your flights.

EARLY ARRIVAL surcharge before 9am
If your accommodation is available and prepared there is a £30 surcharge for check-ins before 9am.

You have access to main living spaces int he apartment and some areas have been locked up for security reasons. Access to the garden is available through the garage. You have free internal parking.

1.The front door needs to be locked with the keys (one turn) every time you leave the house. Never leave the key in the lock.
2.When switching on the lights in the corridor, please use the marked light switch as the lights turn off automatically.

Great location. Just a 5 minute walk to old town. The house is located on a hill so the walk up might be a struggle for some. Great Thai restaurant a block away! (Highly suggest) Americans be aware that the shower is a hand held shower head. The host is VERY good about communication. She responded promptly when replying through the AirBnB app and you cannot get a better view from the main bedroom!

Thanks so much to Marie and Elisabeth for a wonderful stay in Bamberg! The home has wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the large garden and the historical feeling of the home. The location was minutes from two of Bamberg's Beer gardens (called Bier Keller in Bamberg).

Marie's place is a gem. The house felt like a bit like an old palace. It is a bit quirky, but we absolutely loved it. Elizabeth, the housekeeper met us and filled us in on all the details. We were able to park in the courtyard and used the fabulous patio area too. The kitchen, with washer and dryer, were greatly appreciated. Although we did not make much use of the sitting room, we did use it to access the wifi there. We were easily able to walk into the center of Bamberg and take in the sites and Rauchbier. A beautiful UNESCO town, this accommodation fit right in. Thanks for a great experience! Danke schön!

Marie's house in Bamberg is a gem. It's older, but nicely remodeled on the inside. The location was great for walking all over Bamberg. Marie was in frequent contact with us prior to our arrival, arranging to let us in and check us out at the end.

We had a fantastic, enjoyable stay in Bamberg. The home is big, roomy, comfortable, and well-equipped. Beds are comfortable, with fresh clean linens. Bath linens are nice too. We loved the charm of the historical building and neighborhood, and walking to EVERYTHING that is very near. The neighborhood biergarten...the 'Wild Rose' is great! We enjoyed sitting on the home's very private back patio listening to the birds, and church bells. Property manager Elisabeth is punctual and efficient. Private parking is great! Great experience, and definitely recommend this home. Super wifi too!
