Traditional Tuscan Farmhouse in the Chianti hills. Secluded and private down a long unsealed drive, through Chestnut forests, and olive groves the house perches over a valley with far reaching views over villages, castles and vineyards towards the sunset.
The Main House sleeps 10 - Three double bedrooms, two twin rooms plus one child bed. The kitchen has large Lacanche oven and lots of space. Equally lovely in winter as in summer, there are two large open fire places in the open plan living and dining area. Terraces surround the house and are accessible through French doors.
The Capanna (50m away) is a self-contained studio with a large living room and bed a bath on balcony.
We have a large saltwater pool (5m x 14 m) with spacious sun terraces and pergolas. For the more energetic there are miles of woods and hills to walk in beyond the 30 privately owned acres surrounding the house.
It has a huge BBQ with enough chairs and tables to seat 12-18 comfortably on the three terraces. More secluded hammocks and picnic places are dotted around the property under the shade of our olives and sweet chestnuts. We have reliable crystal clear water from our own well and faultless heating and plumbing system. Our bathrooms are modern and work perfectly and every bed- and bathroom has at least one anti-mosquito screen in a window.
We do have 2 more put-up cots for tinies and two old wooden high-chairs.
Situated 40 minutes from Siena and an hour from Arezzo and from Florence you will be spoilt for culture, good food, wine and fascinating experiences such as Siena Palio... if you can tear yourself from the poolside.
We are happy to let you stay for the annual 'Eroica' traditional bike-race in October, which takes place every year in Gaiole. We provide as far as possible a comprehensive guide to the area and local activities.
The two houses can be rented separately or together.
This is a whole property listing. There are options of renting the entire property, just the Main House or just the Cappana. There will not be other guests in the Main house if you do not fill it.
Someone will - if possible - come once a week to do a quick clean (usually Wednesdays) and on Saturdays, either for the hand-over clean or to go through bathrooms, kitchen, floors etc. We will not be present during your stay. I will be available on the end of my telephone for any advice or help, of course.
From the main road you drive 2 and a half km through the woods on an un-tarmaced road which is not suitable for low-slung vehicles, caravans or bikes but fine for normal cars driven slowly. Summer tyres can be a problem on the gravel esp. if driven too fast. The house sits at the end of a long hill which rewards guest with the spectacular view once there.
This is a family home and we have lots of terraces and a large unfenced pool. Children very much the responsibility of their caregivers and we stress the importance of extra care until they are familiar with their surroundings, as we do with our own children. We ask that you respect the home and the personal touches and possessions that we have throughout the house.
We are academics and live close to Oxford, England. We also have a home in Italy and go there lots. We travel whenever we can for work and fun and have lately been to Ethiopia, Australia and Iran, but there is till masses we would like to see all over Europe. We have several children and now also some tiny grandchildren and we have a large garden and kitchen-garden at home which keeps us busy all the time.
