Beautiful, sunlit, lovingly-restored 1927 Riverside Terrace home with chef's kitchen, spacious living areas, original hardwood floors, four bedrooms, and a yard full of young fruit trees and herbs.
You could hardly ask for a better location--we're minutes from the Medical Center, Museum District, Midtown, Downtown and freeways to take you anywhere in town.
I hope that my home will be your haven to rest, relax, and reenergize during your time in Houston. I look forward to hosting you!
My home was built by the Guardian Trust Company in 1927 and was owned by Travis Holland before being sold to Vesta Mae Marvles, better known simply as Beauty, who passed the home on to her nephew, a gospel choir director. I'm told a piano used to sit just inside the front door, and it wasn't unusual for Aretha Franklin or CeCe Winans to pass through.
I've lovingly restored the house in keeping with its original character, and the result is a home filled with positive energy, sunlight, art, artifacts, antiques, handicrafts from my travels, and hand-woven rugs.
The front room runs the width of the house and has three pairs of French doors that open up to a Juliet balcony facing the front yard. There’s a wood-burning fireplace with a reading nook, a seating area with a comfy mid-century sectional and a hand-cranked 1928 Brunswick Panatrope record player. There are dozens of records in the burl Art Deco cocktail cabinet across the room if you want to give it a spin.
Downstairs is perfect for groups to gather or spread out—it’s open enough for everyone to socialize across the kitchen and living rooms, but not so open that you can’t find a quiet reading nook or cozy up to the wood-burning fireplace if it's cold out.
The eat-in kitchen is the heart of the house and a joy to cook in. Whip up large meals on the six-burner Thermador gas range and bake away in the Miele convection oven. A second prep sink makes it easily for multiple people to work around each other.
The kitchen is fully stocked with small appliances, including a Cusinart stand mixer, Cuisinart coffee maker and Vitamix blender, as well as cooking utensils, pots, pans and bakeware. You’ll also find basics such as coffee, tea, olive oil, butter and spices.
Tucked into the corner of the kitchen is a comfy bench seat (my favorite place for an afternoon nap!) and an antique wood dining table that expands to accommodate ten.
The dining nook opens into the living room, with a down-filled couch (also a great place for a catnap!) and a 60” Samsung Smart TV with complimentary Netflix, HBO GO and Amazon Prime Video.
The half bath under the stairs has handmade Moroccan tile, an antique marble vanity, and a full first-aid kit in case of accidents.

Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle shampoo, conditioner and body wash made with organic botanicals, including tea tree oil, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, and thyme are provided in both showers. There’s also a salon-quality Solano blow dryer in the master bathroom.
| Laundry |
There’s a stacked LG High Efficiency washer and dryer pair at the top of the stairs and laundry essentials such as detergent, Oxiclean and Washing Soda, an iron and a small ironing board.
The house sits on a large, lush lot with a fully-fenced backyard. The yard is shared with a garage apartment behind the house that originally served as the servant’s quarters. I live in the upstairs unit, and the downstairs unit is also listed on Airbnb.
The bricked patio at the back of the house has a picnic table and is covered with a cedar pergola strung with café lights and is a great place to relax in the evening.
The yard is full of fruit trees and raised beds with organically grown vegetables. The trees are still youngsters and haven’t hit their fruit-bearing peak, but depending on when you visit, you may be able to harvest kale, chard, butternut squash, potatoes, tomatoes, raspberries, okra, or herbs from the garden.
Right now, blackberries are ripening on the vine and the echinacea’s in bloom, which makes a wonderful tea. I like to grab a few kale and chard leaves in the morning and throw them into the Vitamix to make a green smoothie.
You're likely to see me coming and going and I'm available if you need anything but won't intrude on your stay otherwise.
