Tokeland Beach House
Tokeland Beach House

The Tokeland Beach House has a long history and a lot of character. Built in the late 1800's - if you turned the ship lap on the southeast wall - you'd be able to read the goings on from the Seattle times in 1901. The 7 ft tall windows across the front and side are also a great feature, in addition to the higher ceilings. It's unique, and the view is super!

The house is gorgeous and was such a great getaway for our little family. It was a little farther from the beach than I had anticipated based on the pictures and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps, but the drive to the beach was short enough. The fire pit was a wonderful amenity - we loved making s'mores!

This cabin is in a lovely location near the beach and does accept multiple pets. That said, the place was old and smelly, with stains all over the carpeting. Communication was poor before the trip, but adequate after check-in. Wi-fi stopped working several times, but rebooting the modem fixed that. The view is of a large grassy area that gets flooded when the tide comes in (otherwise known as a slough or swamp). The ocean is across the main road and toward the back of the cabin -- this was not clear from the description, but could have been gleaned from a map. At any rate, I found the view disappointing. It's nothing like looking out the windows at Ocean Crest. There is no closet in the single downstairs "bedroom." Upstairs there's a large loft area with doors, but no curtains or blinds on any of the upstairs windows (this space is called two bedrooms in the description). Since the neighboring houses are very close, there's zero privacy & curtains should be installed. During our stay, the upstairs closets were dirty and had insufficient hangers. The stairs to the second floor are very steep with flimsy railings, but the balcony is nice, and you can almost see a tiny sliver of the ocean. Two of the photos in the listing are somewhat misleading. The main photo is of two houses, not one. Yes, that's how close they are. Furthermore, the copyrighted image is not the view from the cabin, but an aerial photo of Tokeland. When asked about the accommodations over the phone, one of the hosts didn't seem very familiar with the property, and could not give precise instructions for check-in, even though she tried. Nelson's Crab is walking distance and quite lovely. The beaches are walking distance too. Location is great, and the neighbors were friendly and helpful -- the highlight of our trip. The Tokeland hotel is also very close, and was recommended by the host for breakfast in a form email. However, since the wait was over 40 minutes, we didn't get a chance to try it. Full disclosure: After our stay, additional pet fees were demanded by the host for cleaning the rugs, and while it's certainly possible that one of the dogs had an accident that we didn't notice, the rugs were very old and stained on arrival. I will not be disputing the charge because it's easier and less unpleasant simply to pay. On the other hand, I see no reason to sugarcoat my review and make this property more appealing than it is, when better and/or less expensive accommodations are easily available.
Because we are dog lovers - this guest was given permission to bring FOUR dogs. That was our mistake. Maria is an example of why hosts often do not allow pets. In addition to allowing the 4 dogs, we also discounted the pet fee by $105. What we got in return? Pet accidents throughout. As a result, we asked for an additional fee to cover the cost of cleaning the carpet and paying for additional cleaning time. It was still HALF of what the discounted pet fee would have been. What did we get in response? Maria threatened a bad review. We've been in the vacation rental industry for 17 years - and "while it's certainly possible that Maria might be a nice person" it is guests like her that make it difficult for the other 99% out there who are honest, responsible and trustworthy. For anyone reading this response - who would seriously think that an aerial photo taken from 300ft above the water - is meant to represent the view from the house. Really? And please - look at the main photo of the house. See the garage behind it? The one with the same roof line as the house? That's the apartment above the garage - part of the same structure as the house. It's not even detached. And the grassy area out front? - that used to be a golf course that is no longer maintained. It is not a swamp. But if you are someone who calls to ask how to turn a lamp on, or rarely leaves the house - or computer - for four days while the dogs make the carpet their waste deposit - it might look different. And finally - look at the photos again - see all those 7 ft tall windows? Look closer. Wow - curtains!! And we didn’t even charge for the wine spilled on the sheets - which apparently Maria said was there when she arrived. If that was the case - is it weird that she slept in it for 4 nights? Cheers.

A great find for a reprieve from a heat wave in Portland. The location provided exactly what I desired - calm, quiet, serene, removed from tourists and commune with nature. I loved that there was very little nearby to distract me so that I could focus on reading and art projects. The slough across the way was picturesque and walkable (bring LOTS of bug spray as I was a virtual mosquito buffet) and I loved hearing and seeing deer, birds, cranes, etc... The house is easy to navigate and has all provisions needed for a comfortable stay. Bed was super comfy! Nelson for fresh crab, fish and being a destination for coffee a short 3 minute drive away was an added bonus! Finding good fresh vegetables or fruit were difficult as I expected it to be so I just toted my own provisions in and added yummy seafood and was winning. Definitely only expect the basics for a great distance when grocery shopping (the fridge is smallish if traveling as a family so the Local Grocery is the nearest store). I had hoped to discover a fruit stand but apparently the only thing close is a farmers market in Aberdeen - maybe next time. Beach for the dog to play was about 15 minute or so drive. Got to discover Pomegranate which is a cool home goods store in neighboring town. I spent most of my time happily in the hammock chair!

The house is the perfect place for a getaway. Very relaxing and refreshing! Amazing views and fun walking trails out to the bay. Great for a family or a couple of people to get away. I would recommend this place and look forward to staying again!

This place is amazing. A total gem with a million dollar view. Deer and flocks of birds join you every evening. Tokeland is a peaceful coast destination off the beaten path. Take walking the trail to Nelsons for amazing crab!

Very nice house, perfect for a family getaway with children. Very quiet with direct view over the Willapa bay.
