We had a fantastic two-week stay at Il Bambu in July, 2017. My wife and I traveled with our nine month old daughter. We certainly recommend this place and consider it more than suitable for families.
The house is located a ten minute car ride north of Lucca on the countryside. It is owned by Filippo's father and mother who were extremely friendly. They were keen to ensure we had a great stay, offered suggestions on nearby sights and let us try olive oil and wine from the garden.
The house is larger than it looks in the photos and has all the conveniences you need to live comfortably. It has two well-working ACs, hot water (that doesn't run out), a stove (no oven), washing machine, fridge, small freezer, dish washer, comfortable beds, baby cot and a baby chair. The host provided towels, bed sheets, pillows, and comforter. There is a grocery store a ten minute car ride from the house that has all the Tuscan specialties and food you need. Compared to Scandinavia the prices are low.
The surroundings are gorgeous and the pool is perfect for lazy days. Filippo's parents normally live on the premises (in a larger house that is currently under renovation). There is, however, a great degree of privacy since there is vegetation separating the two houses.
The location of the house is hard to beat. Florence is about an hour away, Pisa 20-30 minutes, Cinque Terre 1,5 hour, San Gimignano 1,5 hour. And for a more genuine, and less touristy, Tuscan experience Barga is just 45 minutes away. Also, Lucca is much less touristy than Florence and Pisa and definitely worth exploring. It became our favorite town.
On the Tuscan countryside it is inevitable to come across mosquitoes. The mosquitos in Tuscany are smaller and more aggressive than in Scandinavia but we did not find this an issue since all the windows of the house are covered in mosquito nets. As long as you do not leave the front door open in the evening you will be fine.
Briefly about us: We have traveled a considerable amount both for business and for leisure. This was our first Air BnB experience and we are very satisfied - partly because of the friendliness and hospitality of our hosts, but also because the house itself lived up to, and even exceeded, our expectations.
