My place is close to family-friendly activities and restaurants and dining. My place is good for big groups. It is an old coal mining town with a rafting company 1 mile away.
The house is very conveniently located for Fayetteville rafting and our group of 14 enjoyed staying there. However, please keep in mind that it is a very old house: the decor is dated, there is no wi-fi, and phone reception is not great, the rooms have no fans, there are only two bathrooms (one without a shower). Communication with Debra was absolutely seamless - she is a fantastic host. Pluses: great porch, spacious, clean, enough towels and blankets for extra guests, a bag of chocolates awaiting, sense of living in a historical house. Minuses: furniture is old so you will feel like you are visiting your grandma's house. beds are rather narrow, kitchen not very well stocked. Overall, we enjoyed it but if you would rather stay in a modern hotel, this house is not for you.
As a Florida girl that's never been to a WV, let alone a mining town, staying at Mamaw's in Minden was it's own little adventure. This old family home has a lot of history and the pictures posted by Debra are accurate. The house tells you not only a story of the family but of the town. I can honestly say the character of the house made the weekend that much more of enjoyable, because the mountains of WV are beautiful. This house was a family home for a long time, it was lived in well, and like every old house it has it's quirks. There is only one shower and it's upstairs in the room with the for single beds. So water pressure is contingent on no one else running any water while you're showering. I would have given the house 5 stars if only there was a second shower, especially for a large group of adults; and maybe if it had Wi-Fi. *I'm in grad school and I assumed there was Wi-Fi and missed out on some online homework during the weekend, which was my own fault for not checking.* But at the end of the weekend I can honestly say not having Wi-Fi helped us as a group enjoy each other's time better. Debra was a great host and brought us over extra towels. Otherwise guests should remember that Mamaw's is not a hotel with maid services, and to leave the house as clean as you would had this been your grandma's house. That will prevent anyone in the future from finding dirty dishes like a previous review stated. Lastly because the water from the faucet is not potable, bring some if you plan to cook. I hope you enjoy Mamaw's as much as we did!
This is very-very old house. It is spacious and has 2 floors and nice front porch. It has amazing history, but it also has moldy old smell and does not have modern amenities and appliances. For 4 bedrooms that could easily accommodate 12 people it has 2 bathrooms and only one has a shower. The other has a bathtub that is all rusty and dirty. The house does not have dishwasher; when we arrived, most dishes were dirty and covered with fatty film. The house does not have central air; it has 2 AC window units, one on each floor that are very noisy. It is impossible to shut tight any door in the house except entrance and bathroom doors. It does not include Wifi. But we had plenty of clean towels and other supplies (napkins, paper towels, bathroom tissue...). The washer and dryer were working well.
A perfect getaway in the middle of the green of WV. Clean, very well maintained house with all the required amenities. The place is aloof and nobody is there to bother you around. Pretty near from the New River Gorge Bridge and Thurmond rail road. We were 4 families and every single person praised this place. Host Debra is very gentle, understanding and communicative. Overall it carried a lovely memory of our memorial day weekend tour. Small thing, quality of water in this area doesn't seem to be great so carry your own drinking water. Otherwise all thumbs up!!
