A gated State Park Harbor on Detroit's beautiful Riverwalk steps away from downtown. Perfect for Movement. You can also walk to Eastern Market down the Dequindre Cut, a former rail line turned urban park right out the marina gates.
There are few things more relaxing than falling asleep to a boat rocking. You will stay on my 25 ft. Catalina sailboat. Comfortable accommodation for up to two couples and a fifth person. Small kitchen features a microwave and water heater for coffee and breakfast.
I have reserved the slip at Milliken State Harbor for Memorial Day Weekend. That cost is reflected in the cleaning fee.
For two months during the year, I teach High School marine science and history on a sailing school vessel voyaging from Gloucester, MA to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I also am a foredeck crew member on a 40 ft. J-120. During the summer of 2016, I lived on my Catalina 25, the boat you will be staying on. I usually keep my boat up the Detroit River at Bayview Yacht Club but will sail it to Milliken State Harbor for your stay. If timing permits, you are welcome to join me for this short (1 hour) journey.
The sailboat has extremely comfortable bedding. It can fit up to two people (a couple) in the bow, up to two people in the stern (a couple again) and another two people on the benches for a maximum of four separate beds. The bow bunk is separable from the main cabin with a curtain. While this could technically allow for 6 guests, that just feels too crowded to me.
The boat has a TV and sound system along with an Apple TV for watching movies and streaming Netflix, HBOGo, and Amazon Prime Movies (provided the marina Wi-Fi is working, it usually is). There is an ice chest for chilling beverages but no refrigerator. There is also no A/C, but there are fans. There is a toilet on board, but it is not to be used unless the boat is moving, so you will use the shore bathroom always. There are foldable chairs, deck cushions, and a sun tent over the deck.
You will have private access to the boat. However, the boat is to remain tied up for the duration of your stay. At no time may a guest ever untie the dock lines, attempt to start the outboard motor or tamper with it in any way, or adjust the rigging (mast, shrouds, stays, running rigging) or sails.
I love going sailing! If timing works I would love to take you out with me, but that is not included in this booking. In fact, I cannot accept payment to take you sailing. But people who stay on my boat usually become fast friends.
The boat does not have A/C. There are fans and it ventilates really well. During the day it can get pretty hot (I still lived and worked on the boat all day during the summer), but at night it is pretty comfortable.
We need to coordinate check out time so I can show you the boat and get you settled.
- Under absolutely NO CIRCUMSTANCES can you untie the boat from its moorings, start the outboard motor, or handle the sails or rigging.
- Do not use the bathroom on board the boat while at the dock. Use the shore facilities.
- Showers, bathroom, and laundry facilities are provided by Milliken State Park and Harbor. Their availability and functionality are outside my control.
- You must follow all Milliken State Park and Harbor rules. Please be respectful of neighboring boats.
- If the reservation with Milliken State Park and Harbor gets canceled or changed for some reason, I will do all I can to find another suitable location nearby. However, you will need to cancel this reservation if re-booking a boat well is unsuccessful.
I am an adventurer in search of treasure. I currently live in India where I head content strategy for Times Bridge, leading the world’s best media brands into India. I lead the editorial and business teams of several publications including HuffPost, Business Insider, Gizmodo, AdAge, LifeHacker, and Tech Radar, among others.
The loft spaces I rent are my HQ when I am home in Detroit. My mom, Karen, looks after them while I am away. Collectively, they are my own loft (Artsy River Loft Near Downtown), a loft I use as a creative work space (Factory Art Studio Loft on the Detroit Riverwalk) and a loft I keep for friends and guests (Bright Creative Loft on the River Near Downtown). They are in the same beautiful historic converted factory building.
I previously ran a journalism startup in Detroit called Jaunt (look up "Jaunt Detroit"), which is where I really started to dig into Detroit. Before moving back to India, I worked as a Data Journalist for StockX, a "stock market of things," after spending summer 2016 year teaching myself Python. I also teach High School marine science on a sailing school vessel for 10 weeks out of the year.
I grew up in Montana, I love to travel, be outdoors, eat great food, and meet interesting people.
