Waterfront Gulf Island Get Away …
Our carriage-house loft is a fabulous self-contained 950sf suite, very separate and private from both the main cottage (where we live) and the guest cottage. Our gorgeous south facing waterfront property is at the westerly entrance to Gabriola Pass, and our private pebble and shell beach just doesn't get any better.
We’re a 13 minute drive from the ferry, Village, and Golf Course. Located at the westerly entrance to Gabriola Passage, we look south down Pylades Channel. Valdes Island is a spit away. Decourcy and Ruxton Islands are 2-3 miles away, and the harbour lights in Chemainus are 12 miles away. In the far distance are the radio towers atop Saltspring Island. The year-round seascape view is stunning. The water is always moving, and there’s always activity offshore. Seals, sea lions, otters, and sea-birds are plentiful. Orcas and dolphins occasionally play offshore. Every week tugboats line up a few meters off our beach, waiting for the next slack tide, then slowly snake their log-boom tows through the Pass. During the summer months, we watch a continuous parade of pleasure craft drifting through the Pass. Did you know that Silva Bay is the closest landfall to Vancouver? >> about 18 miles away.
Our private little bay is shared by five other homes, some of them only seasonally occupied. Rarely will you see anyone on the beach, even in the middle of summer. The beach is great for swimming and clamming, and is enjoyable at all tide levels. Small beach fires are ok, unless the fire hazard is ‘extreme’. Winter or summer, an evening kayak paddle from our shoreline is magical. And if perchance you catch a full moon casting a shimmering silver band over the phosphorescent water, the moment is surreal.
The suite is totally self-contained and functional, with a large 3-piece tiled bathroom. Furniture groupings (not walls) demark the open concept kitchen, living room, office, bedroom and foyer areas >> see photos. The very adequate U-shaped kitchen area is well stocked and fully functional. The fragile surfaces on a few pieces of precious Victorian antique furniture must be respected.
Our 3/4 acre property also accommodates the primary cottage where we live, plus a small guest cottage which is generally rented month-to-month, long-term. We are the last driveway at the very end of a meandering rural road. About a dozen deer call our street ‘home’, and we have resident humming birds. Eagles and blue herons land in our trees every day. Our nights are totally silent and totally dark, so bring flashlights, and whispers ...
If you're not driving, your travel options are >>
- arrive at Gabriola's 'Silva Bay' by boat or sea plane (Gulf Island Air), and we’ll pick you up. There are three flights per day, to & from Vancouver International Airport. Flight time is about 12 minutes.
- or catch one of the many Harbour Air flights from downtown Vancouver to downtown Nanaimo. Our Gabriola ferry terminal is a 10 minute walk, and 20 minutes later, we'll pick you up on this side. Harbour Air also flies out of Vancouver International Airport, to downtown Nanaimo. Flight times are about 20 minutes.
- or travel as a foot passenger to Nanaimo from the Vancouver Mainland on BC ferries, from either Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay. Catch our hourly shuttle-ferry to Gabriola, and we’ll pick you up on this side (it’s a 20 minute crossing).
On short notice, bring nothing (other than a toothbrush), or everything. Your menu here is a-la-cart, and we can provide whatever. Steal stuff from our abundant pantry, beer-fridge or freezer if you need condiments, a beverage, or the fixings for any meal.
Smoking is ok outside, and we’re open to discuss your pet. Pricing varies depending on your length of stay, and seasonal demand.
Casey and I are a quiet retired professional couple from Vancouver, who since moving to our 'summer place' in 1999, have thoroughly enjoyed the interaction, conversation and energy of our guests, who have literally been from all over the world. Many lasting friendships have resulted from these connections.
Our loft is primarily for friends and family to use, and it's only rented sporadically. We became new Airbnb hosts in July 2017, and enjoyed 6 couples over 31 rental nights through to Sept 6th. We were delighted to receive 5-Star ratings from everyone! Most of our guests in past years have been students attending Gabriola's 'Island School of Building Arts' (timber-framing & log home construction), and they are generally here for 1-2 months.
Your living space is your private home, as is ours. The rest of the property, the beach stairs and beach are for everyone to equally enjoy. We are simply joint-custodians of this wonderful compound.
The loft sits above the three-bay garage, which is used for cars, bikes, motorcycle, boats, tools, equipment, camping gear, etc. 'Bay #1' (your ground-level entryway) is the very busy 'workshop/maintenance' area, NOT the reception area of a Ritz-Carlton. Rest assured however, that as you head up the stairs, it gets better!! LOL
On arrival, we'll be on-site to welcome and orient you to the property, and to your suite. We have lots of maps, brochures, and suggestions on where to go and what to do.
Be as engaging or detached as you wish. We have learned that every Guest has his/her own style. We are here to help, as/if needed. Share (or not) a potluck dinner/BBQ, or a campfire on the beach. Or grab one of our mountain bikes to explore the Island. Or go for an evening row or paddle from our beach. Want to privately camp on a small outer island for a night or two? We can provision and deliver you to an isolated pristine location in about 20 minutes. One kayak outing is included in each booking. Use of our little 'island-car' would be an add-on.
Our beloved ginger cat 'Leo' will probably demand a couple of cookies every day.
On-site cel reception is good, but elsewhere on Gabriola you might not have coverage. The suite does have working telephone jacks, if needed.
Nothing onerous here. Simply be respectful, quiet, and polite. Treat your space gently, as though it belonged to you, and leave it as you found it: ie.- impeccable!! There is no hierarchy on this lovely compound. We are simply co-custodians, enjoying each day to the max.
As no property in the Gulf Islands has a lot of water, we have to be rather miserly. And our septic tank has a basic request: "don't put anything into me that has not passed through your gut"!
