Waterfront Gulf Island Get Away …

Our carriage-house loft is a fabulous self-contained 950sf suite, very separate and private from both the main cottage (where we live) and the guest cottage. Our gorgeous south facing waterfront property is at the westerly entrance to Gabriola Pass, and our private pebble and shell beach just doesn't get any better.

We’re a 13 minute drive from the ferry, Village, and Golf Course. Located at the westerly entrance to Gabriola Passage, we look south down Pylades Channel. Valdes Island is a spit away. Decourcy and Ruxton Islands are 2-3 miles away, and the harbour lights in Chemainus are 12 miles away. In the far distance are the radio towers atop Saltspring Island. The year-round seascape view is stunning. The water is always moving, and there’s always activity offshore. Seals, sea lions, otters, and sea-birds are plentiful. Orcas and dolphins occasionally play offshore. Every week tugboats line up a few meters off our beach, waiting for the next slack tide, then slowly snake their log-boom tows through the Pass. During the summer months, we watch a continuous parade of pleasure craft drifting through the Pass. Did you know that Silva Bay is the closest landfall to Vancouver? >> about 18 miles away.

Our private little bay is shared by five other homes, some of them only seasonally occupied. Rarely will you see anyone on the beach, even in the middle of summer. The beach is great for swimming and clamming, and is enjoyable at all tide levels. Small beach fires are ok, unless the fire hazard is ‘extreme’. Winter or summer, an evening kayak paddle from our shoreline is magical. And if perchance you catch a full moon casting a shimmering silver band over the phosphorescent water, the moment is surreal.

The suite is totally self-contained and functional, with a large 3-piece tiled bathroom. Furniture groupings (not walls) demark the open concept kitchen, living room, office, bedroom and foyer areas >> see photos. The very adequate U-shaped kitchen area is well stocked and fully functional. The fragile surfaces on a few pieces of precious Victorian antique furniture must be respected.

Our 3/4 acre property also accommodates the primary cottage where we live, plus a small guest cottage which is generally rented month-to-month, long-term. We are the last driveway at the very end of a meandering rural road. About a dozen deer call our street ‘home’, and we have resident humming birds. Eagles and blue herons land in our trees every day. Our nights are totally silent and totally dark, so bring flashlights, and whispers ...

If you're not driving, your travel options are >>

- arrive at Gabriola's 'Silva Bay' by boat or sea plane (Gulf Island Air), and we’ll pick you up. There are three flights per day, to & from Vancouver International Airport. Flight time is about 12 minutes.

- or catch one of the many Harbour Air flights from downtown Vancouver to downtown Nanaimo. Our Gabriola ferry terminal is a 10 minute walk, and 20 minutes later, we'll pick you up on this side. Harbour Air also flies out of Vancouver International Airport, to downtown Nanaimo. Flight times are about 20 minutes.

- or travel as a foot passenger to Nanaimo from the Vancouver Mainland on BC ferries, from either Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay. Catch our hourly shuttle-ferry to Gabriola, and we’ll pick you up on this side (it’s a 20 minute crossing).

On short notice, bring nothing (other than a toothbrush), or everything. Your menu here is a-la-cart, and we can provide whatever. Steal stuff from our abundant pantry, beer-fridge or freezer if you need condiments, a beverage, or the fixings for any meal.

Smoking is ok outside, and we’re open to discuss your pet. Pricing varies depending on your length of stay, and seasonal demand.

Casey and I are a quiet retired professional couple from Vancouver, who since moving to our 'summer place' in 1999, have thoroughly enjoyed the interaction, conversation and energy of our guests, who have literally been from all over the world. Many lasting friendships have resulted from these connections.

Our loft is primarily for friends and family to use, and it's only rented sporadically. We became new Airbnb hosts in July 2017, and enjoyed 6 couples over 31 rental nights through to Sept 6th. We were delighted to receive 5-Star ratings from everyone! Most of our guests in past years have been students attending Gabriola's 'Island School of Building Arts' (timber-framing & log home construction), and they are generally here for 1-2 months.

Your living space is your private home, as is ours. The rest of the property, the beach stairs and beach are for everyone to equally enjoy. We are simply joint-custodians of this wonderful compound.

The loft sits above the three-bay garage, which is used for cars, bikes, motorcycle, boats, tools, equipment, camping gear, etc. 'Bay #1' (your ground-level entryway) is the very busy 'workshop/maintenance' area, NOT the reception area of a Ritz-Carlton. Rest assured however, that as you head up the stairs, it gets better!! LOL

On arrival, we'll be on-site to welcome and orient you to the property, and to your suite. We have lots of maps, brochures, and suggestions on where to go and what to do.

Be as engaging or detached as you wish. We have learned that every Guest has his/her own style. We are here to help, as/if needed. Share (or not) a potluck dinner/BBQ, or a campfire on the beach. Or grab one of our mountain bikes to explore the Island. Or go for an evening row or paddle from our beach. Want to privately camp on a small outer island for a night or two? We can provision and deliver you to an isolated pristine location in about 20 minutes. One kayak outing is included in each booking. Use of our little 'island-car' would be an add-on.

Our beloved ginger cat 'Leo' will probably demand a couple of cookies every day.

On-site cel reception is good, but elsewhere on Gabriola you might not have coverage. The suite does have working telephone jacks, if needed.

Nothing onerous here. Simply be respectful, quiet, and polite. Treat your space gently, as though it belonged to you, and leave it as you found it: ie.- impeccable!! There is no hierarchy on this lovely compound. We are simply co-custodians, enjoying each day to the max.

As no property in the Gulf Islands has a lot of water, we have to be rather miserly. And our septic tank has a basic request: "don't put anything into me that has not passed through your gut"!

需爬楼梯 - One flight of stairs up to the carriage-house loft. Plus stairs down to the beach.
房源里养有宠物 - Our beloved ginger cat 'Leo' adopted us 16 years ago. He'll be curious when you arrive, and might demand a couple of cookies each day.

Beautiful location, 1 of 3 homes on the waterfront plot of land...very, very silent area. Paul and Casey generously let us use their car from an entire afternoon seeing as we arrived with no vehicle. The island is spread out making everything besides nature difficult to access. Arriving from Washington State is a lengthy excursion - 1 four hour bus ride, 30 minute taxi to ferry terminal, 2 hour ferry, 15 minute taxi to the ferry terminal, lastly a 20 minute ferry to get on Gabriola. I would advise a seaplane to save time. However, the American dollar is very strong in Canada making everything affordable.
We were surprised and honored that Sierra and Daniel actually chose to stay at 'Realescape' for two nights, in spite of the difficulties in getting here from Seattle, without a car! Wow, a short hop over to San Juan Island or Orcas Island would have been sooo much easier! Yes, we picked them up at the ferry on arrival, gave them use of a car and bikes, provided the basics for two breakfasts, and drove them to a 6:15am ferry for their departure. And with the strength of their US dollar, all expenses in Canada were discounted by 28%. Thanks Sierra, for your kind words and 5-star rating!

Paul was the most helpful and welcoming host ever. For example, we arrived late in the day and had neglected to buy enough groceries: he pitched in with pizzas for a late night snack as well as all we needed for breakfast. He responds to all inquiries and requests instantly by text , and by phone if requested. He and Casey live on the property but they were very respectful of our privacy. They have both lived varied and interesting lives, so were interesting to talk to. The apartment is just as pictured: comfortably furnished, including some intriguing antiques like a huge Grandfather clock that keeps perfect time. Paul built it himself and knows how to fix or remedy everything.
fyi >> Paul built the carriage-house, not the grandfather clock!! And yes, I am the full-time maintenance guy! We thoroughly enjoyed James & Katie's 10 day visit to 'Realescape'. For many years, James' condo in Vancouver has been a popular Airbnb destination. As an experienced traveler, James has scores of Host reviews from all over the world. So, to receive the complement: >> "Paul was the most helpful and welcoming host ever", was indeed an honour. Thank you James, for your kind words and 5-star rating!

We had a fantastic stay with Paul and Casey! They were lovely, gracious hosts; very willing to help us find whatever we needed during our stay. I would also like to note that they were very kind and patient with our 3-year old; engaging on his level and very respectful. He quickly grew to adore them and would ask about them when we were in the loft (or out in the kayaks!). The space was exactly as described, clean as a whistle, and more than enough space for our family of three. A fully stocked kitchen made for easy cooking at-home. Paul even brought his own bbq over, and offered up extra space in his fridge or deep freeze if needed. Although the space was absolutely lovely and perfect for our island getaway, I should add that it may not be the best fit for a family of multiple/rambunctious kids. Our laid-back toddler was no issue, but there are a lot of beautiful antiques, art, and personal electronics etc that some kids may find tempting to get their hands on ;) We would highly recommend this spot for anyone visiting Gabriola!
We thoroughly enjoyed our interaction with Dustin, Tasha and young Leo. Their advisory about the contents of our carriage-house suite are appropriate, and perhaps better said by a Guest, than by us. This space is still 'in-transition'. Prior to retirement, this 950sf loft was my (Paul's) private office. Three weeks ago another Airbnb guest asked whether we have insurance and photos of everything, just in case. Dustin's comment warrants a prospective Guest's consideration. It's also a good cautionary heads-up for us, as Hosts.

"Real Escape" Was truly an amazing escape for us. The hosts, Paul and Casey were extremely helpful in meeting all our needs during the stay, and have gone out of their way to accommodate our needs. Staying here felt like staying with our parents; They were very caring and always checked up on us to make sure everything was going ok during the trip. The pictures on Airbnb does not capture the true beauty of the loft, and when we arrived, the space was amazing. Big Kitchen, living room with a big TV, and a super comfy bed. What more could you ask for?! Paul was also very accommodating to our needs when we went out fishing, lending us all the tools that we needed and providing his knowledge. Thank you Paul and Casey, this trip will definitely be the one to remember!
Having Jason and Michael here for 10 nights was great fun. Arriving with their Zodiac and tons of fishing gear, they spent many hours every day on the water, often returning after dark, which at times DID worry me! "Staying here felt like staying with our parents"?! Gosh Jason, I thought you were here to get away from your parents, have fun, stay up 'til 3am watching movies, sleep 'til noon, fish 'til dark, and drink lots of beer. LOL !! Thank you for your kind words and 5-star rating!

Rustic cabin living in a 5-star space! Paul & Casey go above and beyond to bring most comforts of home to this island loft suite space... waking up to deer and squirrels running all over the yard; eagles and herons fishing the tide pools; watching the seals watch you; a small climbing adventure to access their beach is not recommended for the physically-challenged - it's quite steep, even with the stairs leading down and remember to check tide charts before heading out - if you're looking to get off the grid and enjoy a break from the city life for a while, this is a fabulous clean, quiet, affordable getaway that will have you wanting to go back again and again...
Carla and Shawn were here for 4 nights, to attend Shawn's daughter's (rather large) wedding. Having lived on Gabriola full-time for a few years, they required no orientation. Even our street, neighbourhood, beach and driveway were totally familiar to them. Arriving without a car, we were happy to lend them one of ours, when they were in a pinch. "Rustic cabin"?? >> Hmmm. I'll have to ponder this one! I thought the carriage-house would compliment any West Vancouver landscape! And the 950sf loft IS finished to a very good residential standard. Yes, the 50 steps down to the beach ARE steep in places, and they ARE getting old. But what a reward at the bottom!! Just consider it part of your daily aerobics routine?! Thanks Carla, a good heads-up for other guests to keep in mind.

We had a great stay at Paul's house. The bed was comfy and the house was equipped with everything we needed. We really appreciated the use of his two kayaks and had a wonderful morning paddle during our stay.
Karilyn and Simon were our first Airbnb guests. As experienced hosts from Revelstoke, we appreciated their input as to what we could do differently, or better. Apparently, we did OK !!
