Birchlea is within a very attractive small horseshoe-shaped landscaped site, overlooking a pretty lochan (Scottish for large pond!). There are 8 other lodges in Kipp Paddock but each is individually/privately owned. which means it is peaceful.
Birchlea is well-placed to catch the sun from morning till evening, with 2 verandas facing towards Screel, one of the largest of the local Galloway hills. Galloway is home to the first 'Dark Sky Park' in the UK and you will see why: the unpolluted night sky is stunning!
Kipp Paddock is backed by a birch forest, part of the more extensive Dalbeattie Forest, home to the celebrated 7Stanes mountain-biking trails. There is also a 9-hole golf course across the road.
Wildlife which may pop out to see you include red squirrels, badgers, deer and countless rabbits.
Kippford sea-front is a 10-minute stroll down the hill. A former fishing village with a history of ship-building, set on the Urr Estuary leading to the Solway Firth, it is now a popular yachting base. It is also an interesting 'no-through' road. While cars cannot venture past the village centre, there are 2 lovely paths: The Jubilee Path (Scottish National Trust-owned lands) is a gentle meander across the hill to our neighbouring village, Rockcliffe (1 mile), with its sandy, curved beach - perfect for litte ones. Or the coastal 'Rough Firth Road' is a pretty coastal path beside Kippford's shell & shingle beaches and many quirky findings (you have to come to find out what those are!).
Backed by forest with walks and cycle trails; shingle and shell beaches along the shore, with views to the islands in the bay, Kippford is perfect base for walkers, rock-poolers, bucket-and-spaders, star-gazers, cyclists, water-sports enthusiasts or anyone who just wants to chill outside The Anchor Inn or The Mariner on a sunny day with a pint of local ale!
Nearby towns are Dalbeattie (3 miles), Castle Douglas (the region's 'Food Town'; 20 mins); Kirkcudbright (famous for its pretty harbour and association with the Glasgow Boys' artists; 1/2 hr) and Wigtown (Scotland's Book Town; 1 hr). There are also several good places to eat nearby, farm shops (Galloway is well-known for its produce especially beef and we have an award-winning cheese-maker nearby), and fun days out for children/teens include Cream O Galloway, The Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory, Mabie Farm Park, Galloway Activity Centre on Loch Ken (all sorts of water-sports, rock-climbing etc.), Laggan Outdoor Centre

When you check-out please strip the beds you have used & leave the used linen/towels in the bath. Please leave 1 key in the safebox & the other in the lodge.
We have a key-code system for access to the keys so guests can let themselves into Birchlea on arrival. We live nearby so are usually available if the need arises and are accessible by phone/email during your stay.
If self-catering, Tesco Supermarket at Castle Douglas, 20 mins; or a large 24h Tesco on main by-pass around Dumfries. Many smaller food shops in Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie has 3 general stores that open late. Colvend (5 mins in car from Birchlea) has a good general store with baking, deli items, licensed, newsagents etc.
Pets allowed - by arrangement. Great area for dogs! We charge £10/week per dog - added as a 'cleaning' fee if you are bringing a dog. Please let us know if you are NOT bringing a dog & we will waive this fee
Owner of Birchlea Lodge, a self-catering log cabin. Dumfries & Galloway native and very happy to be back, after many years living away, mainly in Edinburgh. Passionate about the region, and Kippford in particular. When not looking after Birchlea and our guests there, I edit medical/health science books, try to keep fit, love theatre and film, and have been known to sail (quite badly!).
