Our house is in the Eastern Rhodopes - by our opinion the most magical and hospitable mountain in Bulgaria. Our village Gorno pole (means Upper Field), is the one with most incredible nature of the whole region and stunning landscapes. Around here you can observe rare and endangered animals like vultures, eagles and even wolves. Long time ago we fell in love with this mountain and in 2012 we bought the house and came to live here starting from scratch. Find out more on our blog Happy Rhodopes.
The house with a big garden is located at the periphery of the village and offer stunning view of pure unspoiled nature, spanning up to distant ridges marking the country boundary with Greece. Diverse landscape, swarming with life is created by mixture of grasslands, shrubs, forest and rocks. In the distance huge volcanic cliffs give shelter to breeding colony of Griffon Vultures, Black Storks, Peregrine Falcons, Golden Eagles and flocks of Alpine Swifts, just to name a few. With 20 breeding species of raptors, the wider region (up to 40 km radius) is the ultimate paradise for birds of prey, not only in the country, but in the whole Balkans. In February and early March evenings, you can hear wolves howling, right from your room window. Oh yes, and we have huge and extremely beautiful fig tree, right in front of the house - come in August for a fig feast :)
You can use the whole second floor: bedroom, kitchen, library and children room. Three rooms in total and kitchen in the corridor. Bathroom is shared with us and it is on the first floor. For more comfort of our guests, our hope is that this summer we will be ready with building of bathroom on the second floor. You have full access to the whole garden and if it is the warm season for small additional fee you can pick anything you like from our garden (tomatoes, peppers, fruits etc.).
We make part of our living by working as nature and culture guides for tourists. According to your interests, you can count on us for design and guiding in any kind of customized tour which you would like, be it birdwatching, ancient tree tour, search for minerals along the nearby gorgeous Arda river. We can take you on a hike for wild edibles, to climb local peaks, visit ancient thracian tombs and sacred places with rock carvings, look for animals tracks or just little of everything above.
Since we are strong DIY fans :) and have this 60 years old house since four and a half years, the house and garden are still undergoing some construction and reshaping work. At the beginning we were nearly terrified by the amount of work that had to be done (moreover we lacked skills at that time), but by now we are enjoying the not fast process of slowly improving our living conditions. We hope that you will be able to feel our thrill about that work and see the little structural issues of the place as charming challenges of the village life that accompany and evolve with our story of living the life here.
