Hannah's Haven is a cozy second floor apartment in my home, with a separate entrance. My daughter, Hannah, is teaching English in east Africa, so while she's gone, I am offering the apartment on airbnb. The property is in the historic Oakland neighborhood of Topeka, on a newly improved well-lit street. Off street parking is in back, off a well-lit alley. Though it is in a residential area, it is convenient to downtown Topeka, including the Capitol.
The apartment is newly redecorated and there are lots of windows, so lots of light. I think that's my favorite feature of the whole house. The kitchen sink and counter have been upgraded to make cleaning up much easier. The bedroom has a queen bed and there is a twin size air-bed, the height of a regular bed, which can fit in the living room if the guests need separate beds.
This apartment has a separate entrance, so guests have private access to this completely furnished space. There is a covered patio with furniture next to the detached garage at the back of the property. That is a available for guests, as well, weather permitting.
I will be available to socialize, if the guest wants to, and I would be happy to know the guest(s) more personally. I do lead a fairly busy life, so may not always be able to do extensive socializing. However, If there is something that needs my attention, I absolutely want to know right away. You will be able to reach me by call or text to my cell phone.
It's just half a block from The Pizza Parlor, a popular eating place in Oakland, for decades. This new location is large and has lots of TV's, so it's a great place to watch whatever sporting event is a must see. The food is really good and there's a special every day of something besides pizza. Monday is fried chicken night. On the other end of the scale is Chez Yasu, a French restaurant with a Japanese chef. The food is excellent and highly recommended by Hannah who lived in France for a summer. We only go there on very special occasions, but it is worth the higher price. There are other unique places to eat and see in Topeka, which is an easy city to navigate. Just ask me for suggestions and directions. Some of my suggestions are in the house manual you will see when you arrive.
Mutual respect and kindness are expected, and good communication makes things run more smoothly. Besides the purpose of your trip I would like to know the name of the second guest, if applicable. The no smoking policy must be strictly adhered to, since I'm allergic to tobacco smoke and can smell it anywhere in or near the house. Any use of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited. Any alcohol use must be in moderation as to not disturb the host nor the neighbors. The cost of remedy for damages more than normal wear will be charged to the guest.
When I retired from teaching, I knew I'd miss the kids, so I have substituted ever since. That's my travel money. I travel to see my grandchildren and their families in Ohio and Virginia. I go to Alaska to see my brother and Florida to see a sister. When Hannah is in Africa I try to go visit her. My third trip was in February 2017. Hannah is the youngest of my three daughters. She has a master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and is teaching 6th and 9th graders in a French school in east Africa. While she's gone I'm offering her apartment on airbnb. I have lived in Kansas (born and raised here), Colorado, Virginia, and West Virginia. I have traveled to England, Israel, and Africa. I sing on the worship team at my church and am active in my neighborhood improvement association. I am also involved with one of the ministries of the Topeka Rescue Mission.
