The Hermitage is nestled in the pastural foothills of the Mountain, which provides cooling breezes. A meandering drive through the local village of Gingerland, we are set off the road and are serenely quiet, a short drive to beautiful beaches, the airport and the capital of Charlestown. Spectacular views, great hikes and walking trails and proximity to other inns and restaurants where you can dine. You will love our place for the feeling staying with family who want nothing but your comfort.
Your accommodations are in charming, private, antique filled Caribbean cottages which surround our historic Great House. Dating back to 1670, our property is the oldest surviving wooden house in the Caribbean. Centuries of entertaining occurred here. The Hermitage was a private home for centuries, and has been a boutique inn since 1985. You will gather in the Great House for your meals, for sharing a cold drink and conversation in our charming bar. We have a saying here, you enter as guests and leave as friends.
The rooms are all unique and located within replicas of old West Indian chattel houses and stone ruins. They offer large accommodations; with a king sized bed and private bath, private porch and a hammock. Some of these cottages are perfect for a couple but others can accommodate an additional person on the day beds in the sitting room. Like our other rooms, they are uniquely decorated with period antiques, traditional, old world comforts, bric-a-brac and four poster canopy beds.
Each room is full of sunlight, with shutters that open to views on all sides, up the mountain or down to the sea, and strategically located to catch the prevailing trade winds. Set among the rich gardens, fruit trees, palms and pool, they create a community of extraordinary loveliness and warmth. This is a place where fresh air works better than air conditioning.
Proudly screen-free, there are no televisions but, in a nod to modern communication, rooms have WIFI. They also have porches with hammocks where you can lie with a book and ignore your email. All rooms have small refrigerators, facilities for tea and coffee, and in-room safe.
Gather in the evening in the Sitting Room or at the Bar before going through to dinner. During the day, enjoy curling up in a corner of the library with a good book. Or enjoy the peace and serenity of the East Garden, Afternoon Tea can be taken either at the pool or in the Great House. The House is your tropical home away from home.
Full Planters Breakfast from 8:00am to 10:30am on the verandah. The yogurt is homemade, the sausage is local, the West Indian Omelet is spicy, and the Coconut French Toast is justly famous.
Afternoon Tea and Rum Punch is served in the Great Room or one of the side porches. English teas or our own local bush teas, each with their own restorative effect. The Hermitage Carrot Cake is worth a trip.
Our rum punch deserves special mention. It is a 350 year old recipe that is made with only fresh mountain citrus and local rum. It is made in the morning and sampling has sometimes lead to drinking before noon.
The Hermitage is owned and managed by the Lupinacci family and their staff who will look after your needs, from serving your meals, cleaning your room and organizing your rental cars and any activities while here. Just let us know what we can do make your stay more enjoyable.
Fellow guests become holiday companions on the breakfast porch while planning daily adventures. In the evening, over a chilled glass of sweet relaxation, holiday companions become fast friends while recounting the one another’s adventures.
You will be on a first name basis with everyone here. Our Staff take pride in getting to know you and your preferences. Their care and concern about the little details will have you returning, year after year, to your country home in the Caribbean.
Of course you cannot come to the Caribbean without visiting our beaches, just a few short miles down the mountain side. The sparkling sea that surrounds this island sooner or later beckons everyone. All of the beaches are available for public use, although one or two access roads are privately owned and will be marked at such.
- We are low tech. We do not have air conditioning or TVs in our rooms, but we do have free wifi
