Morning light traditional front 'stoep', fishpond and daybed where a vast orange jasmine tree scents the air and grapes droop in the height of summer.A view of the lush, comfortable lounge where you can borrow a book and curl up on the 3m couch alongside the fireplace.
The perfect SummerHouse - an oasis off Kloof St.

This beautifully styled, Cape workers farm-cottage was built in the 1890s. With 3.6m ceilings, heritage details and an airy feel, SummerHouse is aptly named. The kitchen opens onto a herb garden and lavender edged verandah with outdoor braai and amazing wood-fired hot-tub. Inside, a cement screed shower and cast-iron bath with copper pipes give this home an urban-farm vibe. You'll love being close to the coolest cafes and restaurants, an 8min drive to the beach and 5min nip to the cable car.

This house is perfect for those looking for an oasis of green in the city. Owned by a photographer and writer team, it is filled with curiosities, images and books from all over the world. The space rambles from a front garden with fire-pit to a back garden with a traditional braai and bread oven. With large windows and arched doors, a long lounge, dining room and two private rooms - there is loads of space for two couples. The high ceilings keep the house beautifully cool, while the heritage details and many spaces to relax and think make for a truly restorative holiday cooking great food and living like a local in Cape Town.

SummerHouse has one off-street parking, a large lounge and dining room, a kitchen you simply love to cook in with a herb garden, victorian windows and doors that open to the outdoor barbecue and dining area. The two bedrooms are far away from each other and both have great character. You are welcome to use the washing machine and if you need ironing done simply see the ironing list (Chloe comes in 3 times a week). There is also an outdoor bucket shower with lovely views of the mountain.

Let us know if there is anything you need and we'll try to help you have the summer of all summers.

It is fantastic staying in an area where you can walk and explore the area - you don't have to get into a car all the time - it allows you to live like a local. We call it the ten minute neighbourhood - ten minutes to everything amazing.

SummerHouse is a historic home so love it as you love your own.

The house is perfect for two couples or a couple with two children. There should be no extra guests.

My husband, 14-year-old son and I visited Cape Town for 10 nights in April. We were looking for a house with all the conveniences of home in a residential area that was near a lively commercial area outside the CBD. We also wanted a place with some character, not the cookie-cutter, antiseptic, bachelor-pad or chain-hotel type of experience. The SummerHouse in Gardens a block from Kloof St exceeded our expectations in every way. We loved the Victorian’s high ceilings and spacious rooms decorated with all manner of artifacts, books, and furniture. The beds and furnishings were very comfortable. Many of the lights have dimmer switches. Nicola had kindly stocked the kitchen with a few necessities (coffee, tea, dry cereal, bread, milk, spreads) and a bottle of sparkling wine to share with our daughter who was in Cape Town for a study-abroad program. Although we didn’t use the kitchen to cook (beyond heating up some pizzas) because of the wonderful restaurants only blocks away on Kloof, it has all the equipment to do so. For provisions, a Woolworth’s is within easy walking distance. Loved the convenience of the washing machine in a cabinet in the back garden and how quickly clothes dried on the clothesline under an enclosed canopy. Loved, loved, loved the front and back gardens, especially the back garden with a big dining area and fireplace and a deck area for gazing up at Table Mountain while enjoying a glass of wine. We spent a lot of time out there. And so does the very friendly neighbor cat, who stopped by frequently for a rub around the ears. There are a few neighbor dogs that were a little vocal at times but they were quiet once evening came. We didn’t fire up the hot tub, partly because of the water restrictions. But by far one of the best features of the house is the outdoor shower. The view of the mountain from the French doors in the master bedroom was fabulous. Sadly on the last morning I realized too late that we could have sat on the front porch and watched the sunrise. And it was days into our visit that we discovered the fish pond in the front garden with water lilies blooming! Needless to say, the house was wonderful to come home to after a day of sightseeing. Security is big in Cape Town and it was never an issue at the house, with locking gates and alarm system. Traffic noise was no problem, especially at night. Nicola was wonderfully responsive from my initial contact through the end of our stay, checking in occasionally by text. The WiFi box was out when we arrived and when it was discovered that the outside box had been damaged, Nicola brought over a cell phone to provide a personal hotspot for our use until it could be repaired. Thank you, Nicola and David, for sharing your house with us! It made our visit to Cape Town that much more memorable.
Thanks Susanne for your amazing review and for being such lovely, respectful guests. Thanks also for the feedback. We hope you'll be back for more SummerHouse sunsets and sunrises.

Beautiful house with character in one of Cape Town's nicest neighborhoods.

Nicola is a fantastic host. She provided insightful suggestions on places to eat and shop before the trip, and was available the entire time if we needed anything. The house has a very stylish, rustic feel and a unique layout. Loved the rain shower! Great backyard for hanging out in. Steps from all the action on Kloof st.

Nicola's home is one of the most amazing homes I've ever stayed in- such a special, well designed and quiet sanctuary in the midst of the most lovely part of Cape Town. She was so kind and generous with information prior to arrival- offering us so many great places to visit from boutiques to restaurants, to beaches down the coast, and all the details needed to make the stay so easy and welcoming. I absolutely LOVED the home, it would be my dream farm home with tasteful design elements coming from around the world. And an amazing outdoor area with outdoor fire oven, citrus and lavender growing, fresh flowers and cozy places to relax and a large table to host a dinner party. Honestly such a pleasant experience and I am so appreciative of Nicola's kindness and stylish bohemian-chic design skills. :)
Hi Katy, thanks so much for your amazing review of our home. So glad you enjoyed it. You were our first guests ever and we learnt a lot about what needs to be provided at the house to make it more comfy for you. Thanks also for tipping Chloe so generously. PS. David will be pleased to know the cats have been relocated to Greyton - they love the move.
