We enjoyed our time at Maria’s beach house in Francelos very much. The house is conveniently located close to the local rail line, making it easy to travel without needing a car (it’s on the line to Aveiro, and with a quick change in Porto, you’re also fairly quickly in other cities like Braga and Guimarães). The beach house itself is part of a collection of town houses with a shared pool and tennis courts. The neighbors were very pleasant and helpful as well. Maria's husband was waiting for us with the keys and Maria checked in on us from time to time per Mail to make sure everything was fine. The place itself worked well for us (parents with two children), was pleasantly decorated and had two bedrooms, a kitchen unit and as we were very happy to see, there were two separate bathrooms as well (with two growing children, this is increasingly important!). The beach house is also directly across from the pool on the ground floor, so you can run right out and jump in. Francelos itself is a pleasant get-away outside of Porto with enough restaurants, supermarkets, etc. to meet your needs, while being fairly relaxed and away from the bustle of the average city-beaches. And if you want to run into Porto, you can take the local train and be there within 20 minutes. The beach itself is also close by (ca. 10 minutes walking with kids for us), is wide and sandy and relaxed. We had a few windy days, but you’re on the Atlantic and you can also buy a screen to protect yourself if you need to (I like the wind, but everyone else was sure to bring a little protection so they could lay out). There also seems to have been an effort to avoid building directly onto the beaches, leaving the area with a pleasant, natural feeling. All in all, we enjoyed our time in Francelos and would recommend staying with Maria for others looking to get away a bit from the hustle and bustle of it all (although you can always jump into Porto too quite quickly).
