Enjoy the pond, fire pit, streams, gardens, and access to the ultra cool town of Ashfield - be out in the woods without being in the middle of nowhere!

Modern comforts in this gorgeous, passive solar, post and beam house on 50 private acres with a view of the Green Mountain foothills.

Two huge bedrooms (450 sq ft) and a third medium sized. One of the bedrooms has a king size bed, the two others have queens. There are two and a half bathrooms - one in the master bedroom. There's also a pull out couch on the first floor if necessary.

Passive solar house (wood/oil radiant heat) is spacious and warm; new laundry facilities, expansive and well-equipped kitchen, wood floors, large living room/dining room with wood stove and a 34' x 12' deck that looks an amazing view of the Green Mountains.

A third of a mile off a quiet country road with a pond, fire pit, streams, two large vegetable gardens, perennial gardens galore, with awesome hiking trails, lakes and cross country skiing nearby. Field stone fire pit and gas grill for great summer and fall hanging out.

This property has a little of everything. Privacy, gorgeous gardens, a pond, great walks in the woods and access to the ultra cool town of Ashfield, MA. Ashfield is a quintessential small New England town with great amenities - Elmer's breakfast and lunch (voted best pancakes in New England by Yankee Magazine), The Lake House (a great lunch and dinner place right on Ashfield Lake), Country Pie (the best pizza for 100 miles!) as well as Neighbors (a gas station and convenience store.) So while you'll be out in the woods you're not in the middle of no-where.

Ashfield has a wonderful town beach, town tennis courts (free), and two golf courses. There are many well marked town trails in several locations and the DAR State forest just minutes away with swimming and hiking galore.

There is a weekly farmer's market during the summer, a town film festival in September and the classic Fall event, The Ashfield Fall Festival which coincides with peak leaf peeking and Columbus Day weekend. The annual festival offers craft and art exhibits by more than 50 exhibitors, locally-grown and prepared foods, live music and dance, face-painting and other children’s activities. Admission is free.

Ashfield also boasts the world renowned, Double Edge Theater, whose performances are immersive events that are physical, lush and dreamlike. Each original performance is created by an ensemble of multi-talented artists and their works are toured nationally and internationally.

Ashfield is just minutes from the historic, quaint Shelburne Falls, MA; 30 minutes from the restaurants, culture and shopping of Northampton, Amherst and Greenfield, MA, forty minutes from Mass MoCA and an hour to the cultural gems of the Berkshires; Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow and the Clark Museum.

Only an two hours from Boston; three and a half hours from NYC. DSL and cellphone coverage!

I live part time in NYC and when I am in Ashfield, I live on the premises in a small apartment above the garage but I keep a very low profile. I leave a booklet with all the area attractions, including trails, menus and directions. And I am always available by phone for questions and concerns.

Mary's sanctuary made us deeply happy. We came up for a week of birthday celebrating. She has some serious gardening magic going, a feast for the eyes, noses and kitchen. We found it deeply satisfying at any time of day to wander or daydream outside, surrounded by the smells and sounds of the woods around this beautiful home. And the house itself just makes you feel good all over. Mary has given her visitors wonderful and whimsical windows into her life as an artist and documentarian - with furnishings, photographs, and found objects that beg for storytelling and are quirky and comforting. We slept like logs and felt both totally at home and totally special. Cooking in Mary's open kitchen was a joy, even for three teenage boys who tore through our food stockpiles like wolves. Eating and laughing together on the deck and looking out into the serene view lowered everyone's shoulders from their ears. They lowered even further looking for shooting stars, gathered around the fire pit by Mary's pond. Ashfield and its surround are a favorite spot for us. The boys spent their days on the lake, hanging out at the community basketball hoop, and doubling down on Country Pie pizza and ice cream from the old hardware store. On other trips, we've loved the incomparable Double Edge, rambling the trails of the nearby DAR, and turning up the volume for an evening in Northampton. Mary's provided a binder with lots of maps and suggestions for classic and unusual things to do in the area, for the uninitiated. A total pleasure. We'll be back as often as we can.

This house is gorgeous, great location, great town. Mary was very gracious, always available if we had questions. I would come back to this house in a second. Very clean too. Beautiful outside the house as well

We stayed at this house during our daughter's Commencement weekend. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect place and a more gracious host. The location is very private, with a fantastic view of the hills and the forest from the deck. It is within an easy drive to Northampton and Amherst. There are lots of interesting places to explore nearby. The house is comfortable and clean. It was a great place for our small family gathering (under 20 people) to celebrate our daughter's graduation. Mary was very welcoming and accommodating with all of our requests (late check out, extra guests, bug spray). She even took our dog out when we were out all day for the commencement and offered us to use the vegetables from her vegetable garden. This place is wonderfully serene. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a cozy retreat.
Thanks Natasha for the great review! Come back anytime!

We loved our stay here! The house is spacious with plenty of room. You can't beat the setting--the view out the back of the house was beautiful. We enjoyed walking through the woods and down the rural roads. There was so much privacy, which was perfect for our vacation away from the city. The house has a ton of character and the spiral staircase was so neat. We spent a lot of time hanging around the wood stove chatting and playing games that we brought with us. The kitchen was wonderfully large (with two sinks!) so it was easy for multiple people to help prep and cook meals. It was a huge plus that we could bring our pup, who also had a great time :) Mary was very helpful and communicative even though we didn't get a chance to meet her. We had no issues whatsoever with our stay and highly recommend this spot!!

The views from the house were beautiful, with a great yard and a fantastic kitchen. We had lots of room for the 5 of us, and enjoyed cooking in the wonderful kitchen. Two of the bedrooms were quite large, but up some wooden steps.

Mary offered us a warm welcome. She was very kind and responsive when little things came up - coffee maker wasn't working so Mary bought us not one, but TWO replacements (drip and french press). She encouraged us to pick her beautiful wild flowers and use veggies from her garden. Overall, Mary was a wonderful host. We were already very familiar with the area, but Mary offered us great suggestions for places to eat and see - totally in line with what we already know and love about the area.
Thanks Caitlin! Come back anytime!

The house is beautiful, comfortable, clean and cozy. The gardens and pond are sublime; the property is on 50 acres far from the road so is extremely quiet and relaxing. The room is gorgeous and an amble size for work and lounging with a king size bed that is super comfortable. Mary was generous with information about the area and was very hospitable. And Ashfield is a incredibly cute town, classic old New England but with a wonderful seven day a week breakfast joint and a restaurant on the gorgeous town lake. I would highly recommend it.
