This was me and my boyfriend's first time to St. John and it was serendipity that we got to stay at Lorelei's beautiful hillside cottage. The views from the porch were breathtaking and the cottage was wonderful -- the elegant antique wooden furniture, the colorful and happy wall art by local artists, the well-equipped kitchenette, the excellent wifi, the much-appreciated fan facing the bed, the cooling after-sun aloe gel...haha! The driveway -- like all others on St. John -- is steep and we *highly* recommend renting a Jeep anyway to get around the island. Lorelei's cottage is quite centrally located, about 20 minutes east from Cruz Bay along Centerline Road, and only about 10 minutes from Coral Bay... an excellent point from which to explore the entire island. We spent most of our time soaking up sun on the beach, hiking and snorkeling. Our favorites were the secluded, scenic Brown Bay beach -- requires a moderately difficult ~30 minute hike (bring sturdy shoes and bug spray!) and Little Lameshur Bay which has a wonderful sandy beach and a great little rocky area for snorkeling. Francis Bay and Waterlemon Bay in the north have some great snorkeling, too. Salt Pond Bay beach on the south-eastern tip of the island is a little more crowded, but you can take the walking trail to check out the rugged beauty of Drunk Bay and the stunning views from the Ram Head trail. We highly recommend taking a chartered sunset sail with Captain Jimmy on his Kiyote Sailing Charters. We quickly made friends with his little dog Maisee and enjoyed an excellent guided snorkel around Pelican Rock near Hansen Bay with his crew member, Felicia. Food on the island is generally pretty expensive, but we were able to make breakfast at the cottage on Lorelei's hot plate and pick up fresh fish at the Fish Trap and some flank steak at the Dolphin Market in Cruz Bay and grill them on Lorelei's BBQ. Leftovers were great for lunch on the beach! Biggest 1surprise was the excellent pizza at the Pizzabar in Coral Bay made by Fabio -- he's actually Italian! Overall, it was a wonderful trip and we looked forward to returning to the cottage every night. We'd recommend Lorelei's place to anyone looking for a truly restful and relaxing stay. She is a great host!
