Charming, cosy former artist's studio in beautiful grounds of 16th century cottage on the edge of idyllic Downs village. Ideally located for exploring iconic sites and beautiful countryside. Within walking distance of the Ridgeway and Uffington White Horse.
This studio is nestled in the grounds of our 16th century thatched cottage and was used as a pottery studio before we converted it to living accommodation. We have lived in the cottage for 14 years and never tire of the charm and fun of having a stream running through the property, at a constant (chilly!) temperature and flow all year round.
Watercress used to be grown commercially in the beds above our property, which was then sent to London to be sold, and the stream also provided the water supply to the village. The ram pump housing is the curious building on the far side of the stream. The house was previously known as Washpool cottage, and there are the remains of a sheep dipping area down by the cottage. The garden is rambling and forgiving, constantly in “project status” and we always welcome new ideas!
The villages of Ashbury and its neighbour Kingstone Winslow offer many pleasant walks and a brochure is available which charts the historical nature of many of the houses. There are several routes up to the Ridgeway from the village, and you can venture to Ashdown House or Waylands Smithy or the pretty village of Bishopstone within a few hours.
We are happy for guests to wander around the garden or even enjoy breakfast or an evening drink by the stream.
We are always happy to answer questions about the local area and hear your feedback on local attractions and eateries.
There is no kitchen facilities in the room but we can lend you a cool box if need be. Also please note there is no wifi in the room but you're welcome to use the cottage wifi by sitting in the garden to log on.
Parking is for one car out the front of the property. Please park any additional vehicles on Chapel Rd (first road on the right hand side as you go up the hill)
