Large private room in a traditional stone villa, with stylish bathroom shared with one other bedroom. We're in a quiet street in south Newington, right next to the Uni King's Buildings, with quick and easy access to city centre. We're good for couples, families, business travellers and visiting academics, though as room is on second floor, less good for anyone with reduced mobility.
If you are planning a visit to beautiful Edinburgh, we can offer you a warm, comfortable welcome. We have two beautiful rooms, and this listing is for the bigger of the two, with views over the rooftops to Arthur’s Seat, the volcanic plug that dominates the Edinburgh skyline.
We are eventually aiming for an arts and crafts vibe, but we’ve only really got the antique (non-squeaky) bed so far. We can also put up a camp bed for a child or third person in the room.
Both rooms are in the garret on the top floor, up a windy stair (so maybe not suitable for anyone with mobility issues) with a bathroom shared between the two rooms.
Our house is a traditional Edinburgh Edwardian villa, made of sandstone with large windows and a cupola above the stairs that lets the light flood in. It is in warm, even when it’s cold outside, especially in the living room, where we have a wood burning stove. The road is very quiet with plenty of free parking available.
We are a vegetarian household, and so prefer not to have meat brought into or cooked in the house. Instead, on offer will be freshly made bread, jam, cheese and muesli. We can provide a range of teas and we can even make you an espresso if you like.
Situated on the edge of the hotel quarter, next to the University of Edinburgh’s Kings Buildings, we are about 35 minutes’ walk to Princes St, the heart of the city centre. We’re also two minutes’ walk to bus stops with frequent buses into town, including night buses (though they’re a bit less frequent), or it’s a 10-minute taxi ride. We’ve maps, guide books and leaflets to help you choose how you want to spend your days, and we can recommend great places to eat.
There are three of us living in this large house, where we also have our home office. Our day job is communications, but our passions are very different. Simon is a luthier in his spare time, building gorgeous mandolins and guitars. He also plays guitar and banjo, while Su plays the mandolin. Su also likes to paint and has a studio in the garden. The third member of the household is Watson, our rather scruffy Bedlington terrier. He’s friendly, but a bit shy sometimes. He is also a food-stealer and very nosy so we forbid him entry to the stairs to the garret.
You'll have access to your bedroom, which you can lock, the upstairs bathroom and use of the large kitchen/living area downstairs. Also feel free to sit out in the garden if the Scottish weather allows.
We'll try to do our best to help you make your stay in Edinburgh a good one. We both work from home so should be here if you need any advice about what to do, where to go or how to get there. We're also very easy going, so if you want to know anything or have any requests we've not covered here, please let us know.
