The home looked exactly as shown in the pictures. Their home was also very very clean. It was pretty close to Portland as well. The price was better than other listings in the area. Their dog Daisy is an angel.
Communication & accuracy of the listing description seemed to be the biggest issue here. We booked this Airbnb for a Saturday. The description stated check in was flexible. We needed a flexible check in time since our flight would not arrive until midnight. After getting a rental car and driving to their location, we would not arrive to their home until 1 AM. We messaged Ted & Dolores asking if a 1 AM arrival time was acceptable. Dolores replied back that it worked for them. We thought this meant that they were OK with us booking their Airbnb for 1 Saturday and arriving really early at 1 AM on Saturday. This turned out not to be the case.
When we arrived, nobody was awake. We had to ring the doorbell & call many times. Eventually, their dog Daisy woke them up with her barking. Dolores let us in & told us we did not say we were arriving at the time we did (I have screenshots of our conversation to prove otherwise). The next morning, Ted tells us that if he was the one that woke up, he would have called the police on us. This made us feel really unwelcome.
Additionally, we had to return from our outing before Ted & Dolores were asleep. This was not mentioned in the listing description. If it was, we would have booked differently. In fact, we recommend they update their profile picture to a photo of just them. At the time of our booking, their photo included 3 younger individuals at the center of the photo & 2 older individuals at either end. We assumed the younger couple would be the hosts, but we were mistaken.
When we were checking out, we waited to say goodbye to Dolores. However, instead of a goodbye, we were told that we owed money for an extra night's stay. Again, we messaged them in advanced asking if our early arrival was OK, and Dolores said yes. If it was not OK, we would have booked differently. We have screenshots of that conversation, the flexible check in time, & their profile pic to prove our case.
We think the communication & listing accuracy as well as feeling unwelcome made it so that we did not enjoy our stay. We were not a right fit for each other, and if communication & listing accuracy were better, we could have both realized that beforehand and avoided the misunderstanding.
