Spectacular views! Galiano Harbour View House is a 3 bedroom home on private, forested acreage with sublime views over water, islands & mountains.
850 sq. feet of west facing deck for amazing sunsets, and always a shady spot with a view.
Two night bookings available from Sept. - June, but preference will be given to longer reservations with reduced rates for weekdays. Minimum six night booking for the summer 2018, and 3 night minimums on low season holiday weekends, Friday or Saturday arrival.
Welcome!.... to our 3 bedroom, 2 bath house on private acreage above Montague Harbour. Recently renovated, the west coast modern home was designed around the view with an expansive deck facing west & southwest overlooking the harbour and Trincomali Channel across to Saltspring & smaller islands. The hillside below the house is a favourite place for birds of prey to soar, and you will likely see deer grazing in the yard. Vacant, wooded acreage properties on either side for total privacy. Immediately adjacent to Montague Park for low tide walks.
The house is located in the centre of the property, completely private from the road and other houses, and is accessed by a driveway that winds down the hill through enormous fir & cedar trees. There is a master bedroom facing the green forest, with queen size bed & a sofa bed. The second & third bedrooms have water views & patio doors on to the deck, one with a queen bed, another with a bunk bed. The kitchen is open to the dining & living room, with more patio doors to the deck, & amazing views from all. 5 minute drive from ferry terminal. Great drinking water & good cell phone reception.
THE IMPORTANT STUFF
For 2017 the holiday and summer rate is $295/ night in summer. Low season rates are $240 / weeknight, $260 / weekend night. A $100 cleaning fee will be added to all bookings, and there is a 5% discount for week long reservations. The hot tub is not warm all the time, but it is available to guests for a small surcharge. The house is suitable for families of 5 or 6, occupancy limit is 7. I ask that guests provide the full names of all who will be staying in the home before I accept a booking and understand that the rental is specific to those named persons only. airbnb may also ask for a list of names , with email addresses, but this is not passed on to the host.
The whole house & most of the 1 & 1/2 acres of property are available to guests, aside from a small storage room that I keep for personal items. There is also a narrow strip of land on the north side of the house & under the deck that is used for tools & construction materials, I ask that guests consider these areas to be out of bounds. Guests should be aware that I do reserve the right to the use of the eastern half of the property, which is between the road and the house, but the house is very much oriented to the west - it was designed to take best advantage of the view over the harbour, so there is virtually no impact on your privacy when I am up the hill from the house.
There is a BBQ, but it is not included in the rental of the house. I usually allow guests to use it if they ask on arrival or beforehand, but only if they are prepared to clean it thoroughly before departing.
Use of the hot tub is only by prior arrangement with us, I ask that all guests be familiar with the nature of the gulf islands water shortage, and understand that there is a special responsibility that goes with having a pool or hot tub in the islands. The hot tub cover MUST be kept on the tub whenever it is not in use in order to keep leaves etc. from contaminating the water. The $30 surcharge for having the hot tub available is primarily intended to provide a mild disincentive to those who would likely not use it anyways, allowing me to keep the water cold most of the time. This greatly reduces the frequency of complete water changes, an important issue on an island with limited water supply.
I usually meet guests at the house to introduce them to details such as television, hot tub, laundry woodstove, etc., and to talk about best walks & restaurants & other things to do on the island. There have been occasions when I've spent several hours touring or hiking with guests - especially when they have walked on the ferry or flown in to Montague & have no vehicle.
Sorry, no partiers. I ask that smokers do not light up in the house, & be acutely aware of the ultra dry forest in the summer months, everywhere on the island.
The water quality is excellent, but I request that guests be conservative in order to avoid future shortages & the infiltration of salt water in to the water table, as is happening in other parts of Galiano and the other islands. The hot tub is only available to guests that have arranged specifically for its use - the cover MUST be left on the hot tub any time it is not in use, no exceptions! Children under five years of age are not permitted in the hot tub. Please shower before using the hot tub, and no sun tan lotion. There is laundry facilities in the house which guests may use, but we ask that you help us save water by doing so only if absolutely necessary - Those who are only travelling from the lower mainland or Vancouver Island especially. We provide bedlinens and towels, but if it is not inconvenient for guests driving on the ferry to bring their own bath towels then that is also much appreciated. We offer a discount to guests who can bring their own bedsheets and towels and will agree to not use the laundry.
We do not allow pets loose in the house, but we will consider renting to those who have small dogs with a travelling / sleeping crate. It is important that children do NOT explore below the house without the care of a responsible, sober adult. Be aware that the hillside drops off to a cliff at the park boundary several hundred feet below the house, all guests must be cautious & responsible for their own safety on our property.
There is no municipal garbage collection on Galiano, so we would be grateful if you can take your bag of garbage with you on the ferry when you leave if you can - we usually walk on, so garbage disposal is difficult & expensive. The absence of a landfill on the island has affected Galianos' culture a great deal, there is tremendous support for the recycling centre and it's very extensive program. We urge our guests to leave returnable bottles for donation to the Recycling Society, as most island residents do.
WiFi is provided , but we ask that guests understand that it is through a transmitter on Saltspring Island and unlimited data is not available. We ask that guests limit video streaming and other high data consumption to an hour or two a day. Galiano is a wonderful place to be outdoors.
Hi! I am a 50 something guy with a great love for the outdoors, sailing, skiing & especially Galiano Island. I discovered what fun it is to host people in my home several years ago through a spectacular European vacation with a series of home exchanges. There is a vicarious thrill that comes with "showing off" a place that you love, I hope that you will take up my offer to explore one of the Earths' most beautiful islands.
