La Porte's original name was "Rabbit Creek", is surrounded by the Plumas National Forest. Its a great place to get away from modern life and enjoy the pleasures of hiking, fishing, nature walks, mountain biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling or just relaxing on the porch.
The first downhill ski races were held in the La Porte area in the 1860's. In the Winter there's lots of snow for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. You can start your cross country ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile trip right out the front door of your cabin.
In the Summer, Little Grass Valley Lake is just 4 miles up the road. There's lots of small streams and miles of trails to hike and fish or picnic by. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through this portion of the forest not far from La Porte.
There's many historic town sites and cemeteries in the area. Some within walking distance and others within a few hours drive.
You're in for a relaxing vacation in La Porte (population 26). La Porte is an old gold mining town first settled in 1851 by 49ers prospecting for gold. In it's heyday, La Porte had a bustling population of about 900 with 7 saloons, 3 hotels, 2 theaters, breweries and a large Chinese section in the vicinity of the China Alley of today. Hi everyone. We are new to airbnb and we are in LOVE with this sight. We recently purchased our cabins in January of this year(2013) I came from the city and had never found my "nitch" for the mountains/woods UNTIL I came to La Porte last November. We stayed in China Alley Cabin B for the night and then to cut a Christmas tree the next morning. It was right up the road.:) Anyone who loves the mountains and winter or summer out door sports(also water sports) is going to LOVE California's best kept secret La Porte California. Anyone who is from the city and thinks that the "country/mountains" are not for them. Our beautiful rustic oak paneled cabins will change your opinion .I can say will out a doubt in mind you will absolutely fall in LOVE with our BEAUTIFUL cabins needless within the Plumas National Forest. We know you will .....JUST LIKE WE DID.
