House is very near to RI College and Providence College, 15 minute drive to downtown Providence and Amtrak, another 5 minutes to Brown University and RISD. Probably 25 minutes to airport, 27 minutes to Woonsocket. #44 bus has a stop about 5 minutes from the house and will get you downtown in about 25 minutes. Uber responds quickly and cheaply. There are local businesses, restaurants, tattoo joints, bagel shop, pet grooming services, a dancing florist, a shop for witches, banks, etc. within walking distance. The great thing is that there are tons of individually owned businesses rather than chains in this area.
Out of respect for our global environment, we ask that you be conscientious about energy usage. We use individual room fans for cooling unless it is exceptionally hot. There are no individual room air conditioners. And we ask that you wear a sweater in the house in cold weather.
IMPORTANT: This is a SMOKEFREE home and yard. Also, IN WINTER MONTHS WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO USE UBER OR THE BUS BECAUSE THERE IS NO STREET PARKING IF THERE IS PLOWABLE SNOW. THERE MAY BE DRIVEWAY PARKING BUT CHECK WITH US FIRST.
Your room is on the first floor which has a full bath. The bath, kitchen, music space and living/dining room are all shared and available to you. There is also a deck and a yard.
We have erratic schedules so there is a fair amount of coming and going but we will always be available to help you find your way around the house, the neighborhood, the city, and beyond, if not in person, than via email/text/or call. When we're around, feel free to join us for a chat and a cuppa tea or whatever. The dog and cat are fairly free-range but will not have access to your room as long as you keep the doors closed. They are friendly! And so are the humans.
Very quiet, nicely maintained leafy neighborhood. Safe. Pleasant to walk/run/bike through. Not quite suburban, not quite city.
This is a quiet (but not silent) household in general so we ask that after around 10pm the volume on any devices as well as voices grows a bit more subdued. And please, no activity that would disrupt guests, hosts or neighbors. Remember, this is a home. Please show the respect to others that you would like shown to yourself.
I'm a community artist, writer, educator, climate justice activist and love the outdoors. I was born in Taiwan, grew up in the Midwest near Chicago. I'm re-learning Taiwanese and hope to go back soon. As the director of a low-residency degree program in art, I'm so lucky to have a job I can do from home or wherever I travel. My two incredible sons are both away for school. When they're visiting, we have board games, watch sci-fi together, and eat great food (I love to cook and garden). Hospitality and generosity are big in my household.
