Our 1950s period home, complete with little portico stain glass patio windows, is in Plumstead/Southfield, Cape Town. We love our home. It's colourful, comfortable, unpretentious and calm and perfect for another family.
It has three large bedrooms (one king size bed, one queen, one single ) and easily sleeps four.
The main bedroom at the back of the house away from the street, is en suite and opens up onto a covered veranda that overlooks the back garden and receives afternoon sun.
The second bedroom is recently refurbished into a peaceful, white bedroom with a queen size bed.
The third bedroom is perfect for a child (our son sleeps there) so full of things that are important to a boy of ten.
Our kitchen and accompanying scullery is the heart of the home, with a round wooden table on which we have most of our meals.
The kitchen is completely kitted out with fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, oven and hob. We don't have a microwave. There are recycling bins, a bokashi bin and a compost heap for kitchen scraps.
There is offstreet parking for a car. The gate to the property is remote controlled. The neighbourhood is safe and quiet - there is a catholic church across the road from us, and the local library (if you're a book lover) is just around the corner.
There is a supermarket immediately behind us (Shoprite) but it's rather basic. Gabriel Road Pick n Pay is three minutes drive from here, Constantia Village roughly 7 km and Plumstead has its own Spar on Churchhill Road (5 minutes' cycle or 20 minutes' walk).
The Saturday Earth Fair market is about 20 minutes' drive down Main Road to Builder's Warehouse in Tokai (follow signs to the market) for organic vegetables and ethically sourced meat and dairy.
Plumstead station is 20 minutes' walk from our house. It connects you with the city and many of the False bay beach villages - St James, Muizenberg, Fish Hoek.
Visitors can enjoy feeding and interacting with our hens.
The garden is child-friendly and private. The neighbourhood is quiet with very few people about. It is possible to work from home undisturbed. We have a Wireless and ADSL connection for this purpose.
There is a washing line for drying clothes in the garden. Towels and linen are provided. And both bathrooms have baths and showers, basins and toilets.
You are welcome to help yourself to the eggs from our hens, and vegetables in our garden whilst you are here.
Ackim Phiri, our Malawian housekeeper, services the house twice a week.
The whole house and garden.
Guests will have the house to themselves. We are away at a wedding over the period 22 September to 02 October 2016.
Please, no smoking inside the house at all.
