My 5-year-old daughter and I recently spent 7 weeks with the Iñiguez-Arteaga family. This was our first time in Ecuador and luckily we found them on Air BnB with stellar reviews. I could not have made a better decision, as they were loving, accommodating and shared fully with us.
In the house is mother, Ines (age 81) and daughter, Diana (53). 4 of the other 5 children of Ines live in Cuenca and are very close, so there were always family and friends visiting in the house. From day one, we felt a part of the family and always had people to practice Spanish with (which was my goal). The family was generous enough to invite us a few times to their house in the countryside (Jadan), where we had big family gatherings with lots of food and hikes through their fruit trees down to the river. Diana was so kind to accompany me on many errands, especially when first settling in. I quickly trusted her to even look after my daughter a few times. This safe and social aspect was the most important consideration for me as I chose a family to stay with during our 1.5 month visit.
The family has been hosting international students and travelers (incl for various Spanish Lang schools) for the past 30 years, some for up to 6 months each. Other than Diana’s and Ines’s bedrooms, there are 3 other bedrooms in the house, available to rent: 2 upstairs nearer to them and one room downstairs. The bedrooms are best suited for 1 person each. The stay includes breakfast, and lunch if you want. They were accommodating to our dietary needs. There are 1.5 bathrooms in the house, a beautiful flower garden out front, a back patio “art room” (Diana is a great painter and has her artwork throughout the house), a small back patio where we did our laundry weekly and where my daughter played, a living room and dining room where we spent many hours chatting and playing cards. Diana and Ines are sticklers about cleanliness and Esperanza has been working there M-F 9-3, to keep the house spotless. Esperanza grew up with the family, near their country house, and was always a pleasure to spend time with also.
The house is very conveniently located on Remigio Crespo and Guayas. On the same block are restaurants, laundry service, and mini-market and it’s 1-2 blocks from 3 diff bus stops (#16, 18, 12). It was easy to take a bus or walk to the Centro, or hail a taxi in seconds to go most places for the min $1.50.
If you are looking for a homestay experience, where you are treated as family, in a comfortable, cozy and conveniently located house, don’t hesitate to stay with the Diana and Ines.
