NEW: THE CITY OF BONN INTRODUCES ACCOMMODATION TAX
On the 1st of July, the city of Bonn has introduced an accommodation tax of 5% (Beherbergungssteuer). This tax is paid by the guest, but the obligation to remit the taxes to the city falls on the host. To make things as easy as possible, the tax is already included in the airbnb rate. You do not have to pay anything else when checking in (as it may be the case with other accommodations in Bonn).
The city has posted all information on the new tax regulation on their website: (URL HIDDEN) search for Beherbergungssteuer or direct link: (URL HIDDEN)
Airbnb also give information on local occupancy taxes in their FAQ section.
For business travelers, there is the possibility of a tax exemption. The city of Bonn has set the following rule for the exemption:
“Accommodation tax is not required if your visit is mandatory. This would be the case if without the accommodation your job cannot be executed. A declaration by your employer regarding the reason of your accommodation here in Bonn can be given in writing, explaining the reason for your stay. Should your stay involve a congress, training or similar, confirmation is no required.”
This means that as an employee, you can fill in and sign a form by the city, confirming that you are in Bonn for business. Additionally, you need to present the above mentioned declaration by your employer. As a freelancer, you can fill in and sign another form by the city, confirming that you are in Bonn for business.
For administrative issues, I need to ask you to present the form and the confirmation at least the day before check in. You can find the form online (link above) or ask me and I will send it to you. Once I have the signed confirmations that ensure the exemption, I will reduce the price via the airbnb system accordingly. For later requests of tax exemption, you need to deal with the city of Bonn directly.
I have been born in Bonn and my family owns the house for generations. I work for an automotive company, enjoy riding my motorbike and play pingpong.
Me and my family are happy to host nice people from all over the world who visit Bonn.
