I am a local Malaysian artist, originally trained as a textile designer in print & wovens in the UK & in New York. These days I work out of my studio in Penang. I have been working with the Penang Heritage Trust, the local NGO that works really hard to create heritage awareness & to promote the local intangible & tangible heritage we are so lucky to have here In George Town & Penang.
Originally born in KL, I grew up on lots of plantations all over Malaysia and had a really great family and a brilliant childhood. My husband & I have spent our lives together doing 'projects' that we then 'share'. This includes this property China Tiger, our property on Pangkor Island, Tiger Rock & our boat in Indonesia, Tiger Blue. Now we offer them out to guests whilst promoting the best in service & Malaysian (& Indonesian) hospitality, always keeping the local community in mind & making sure that they benefit out of all this as well. My aim is to promote the local people, local products & we buy & use things from our immediate neighbours and stores.
We restored China Tiger some years ago, & before that restored & lived in the house that belonged to the wealthy Chinese merchant Koh Lay Huan, next door. A huge project that brought the family into George Town for 5 & a half years. We had a great time!
George Town is inspiring and certainly in the last couple of years it has been very much instrumental in how I now form any of my recent artwork. It is full of surprises & lots of 'treasures'(some of which you will see in China Tiger). I love the jungle, having grown up with it, and the environment, natural history and heritage of Malaysia is something I'm promoting for us all to preserve & keep for those ahead of us.
We have just purchased a barn in Piedmont, Italy, our new project!
PS. the puppy in the pic is not mine. He belongs to the great people who run the bar 'Alabama Smash' down the road from us!
