Clean, comfortable & convenient. 1/2 block to Grand Ave/Lakeside Park. Walk to just about every amenity & point of interest in the center of Oakland. EZ access to freeways & public transportation. Appx 10 miles to downtown SF, five to UC Berkeley.
Built between 1908 and 1909, our "Eclectic Craftsman" house was part of the development boom of grand homes in the Adams Point neighborhood that took place in Oakland after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Whether you are touring, visiting family or friends, or coming for business or to work, we invite you to make our home your “home away from home."
There are two bright and airy bedrooms next to each other on the second floor. A full bathroom, with shower over tub, is steps from the guest rooms. There is also a half-bathroom on the first floor. Both bathrooms are shared.
BEDROOM 1 faces south. It is furnished with two twin-size beds, a desk, chairs, and a small low table. There's ample space for storage in the closet, dresser and desk, which are exclusively for guest use.
BEDROOM 2 is a south and west-facing corner bedroom. It is furnished with a queen-size Tempur-Pedic bed and lovely heirloom pieces, including an Eastlake secretary that guests may use as a desk. There’s also a guest-dedicated closet and full dresser in the bedroom.
Guests will have full access to the following areas and items:
KITCHEN: Guests have full use of the kitchen, including cabinet and refrigerator/freezer space upon request. Help yourselves to dishes, eating and cooking utensils, pots, pans, etcetera, and basic supplies such as oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar, and whatever condiments and spices we have around.
LIVING and DINING ROOMS: You'll find the TV, a baby grand piano, books and magazines in the living room. The pocket doors in both the living room and dining rooms close for privacy.
POWDER/HALF BATHROOM: On the first floor.
WASHER/DRYER/IRON: We have a front-loading washer and dryer and will supply detergent, bleach, and fabric softener. Iron and ironing board available upon request.
NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES, BOOKS: We subscribe to the daily New York Times and Oakland Tribune, Sunday San Francisco Chronicle, New Yorker and a variety of other magazines, and have loads of fiction and non-fiction books. You are welcome to borrow whatever interests you. Please return items where found.
We are an extended family of four: my husband, his two older sisters and myself. We are retired or semi-retired. When we're home, we are usually in our studies, the kitchen, or our bedrooms. The house is large enough, however, that you can enjoy a great deal of privacy when you want. We are available for friendly talk at your pleasure and questions/assistance as needed.
LINENS, TOWELS, ETC: We will provide linens, towels, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, and liquid hand soap. Linens and towels are changed weekly.
PARKING: We have a long and narrow driveway where we park in tandem. Please let us know in advance if you’ll be needing a parking space and we will work it out. Otherwise, street parking is generally tight. If you do park on the street, be sure to check signage for street-sweeping days or other restrictions in our neighborhood and other parts of the city. Also please note that parking in one place for more than 72 hours at a time is not permitted anywhere.
DOGS: We have two small dogs: Artichoke, a 15-pound Lhasa Apso-Shih Tzu mix, and Mouse, an 8-pound "puppy" (we are told) of an unknown breed. They are protective of us against strangers and bark at perceived threats including guests, the mailman, and other animals. It is OK to pet and play with the black dog, but please do not pet the black and white dog. We can keep them on-leash and/or out of your way if you are not comfortable having them around.
CATS: We also have two cats but they are confined to my older sister-in-law's private quarters because my other sister-in-law is allergic to cats.
HOUSE QUIRKS: The house is over 100 years old. Charming, still, but starting to show its age: creaky stairs and squeaky doors that don't shut. If you are a light sleeper or highly sensitive and intolerant of any noise, you are not likely to be happy and comfortable here.
1. No smoking indoors, excessive alcohol, or guests without permission.
2. Please keep shared/common areas clean and tidy after every use and return borrowed items where found.
3. Check in is at 2 PM. We have 24-hour check in, but please let us know your ETA, especially if you are coming late, so that we can be sure to be up to greet you.
4. Check out is at noon. We are happy to keep luggage in the living room for a reasonable time until your departure from the area.
5. We will try our best to accommodate early check-ins and late check-outs.
6. Please be mindful of utility usage, especially water.
7. The housekeeper comes on Mondays and will need access to your room.
8. Please do not hover over or pet Artichoke/Artie, the black and white dog.
Originally from the Philippines, I have been a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area since 1970. I love traveling, making new friends, and enjoying multi-cultural experiences. Besides the Philippines and California, I have also lived in Japan and Mexico. I now live in Oakland, California, with my husband, our son, two sisters in law, two dogs and one cat. My husband and I have three children between us, ranging in age from 22-47. We are empty nesters.
