Shilo Farm Barn Retreat

2 - 12岁

The Barn Retreat is a unique experience to stay in a completely renovated self contained apartment within a historic barn.

With 18th century charm, Shilo Farm offers comfortable accommodations with rejuvenation and convenience in mind. The feel of the home has been described as rustic elegant with an eclectic flair and our walls are filled with a unique collection of original art for inspiration and reflection.

We currently have three spaces available: The Barn Retreat, The Farm House Suite and the Skylight Suite. All have private bathrooms and share the kitchen and all common spaces (ie the Dining Room and Living Room). The description as follows is specifically for the BARN RETREAT:

The Barn Retreat is a unique opportunity to stay in a completely renovated self contained apartment (cozy at 500 square feet) within a barn. No detail was overlooked during the creation of this space; from the river rock path inlayed in a cork floor to a shower flanked by two cedar tree trunks harvested from the property. On the first level there is a composting toilet that was custom built and made from western red cedar and a locally harvested cedar burl. There is a wood stove as well as a Rinnai Heater for those chilly nights and an air conditioner for the steamy ones. There is small refrigerator, a soapstone sink and hot plate for tea/coffee.

Sleeping arrangement: There is a King Sleep Number bed on the second level. Within that same room are two lofts with twin beds. The lofts are accessed by a ladder and overlook the King bed. NOTE: The ladder is steep and ideal for children 7 and up. Weight Limit for loft space is 200 pounds.

You also have access to the main kitchen and the community "Green Room" and Dining Room.

Enjoy the serenity of the landscape while you sip on your morning coffee or tea. We invite our guests to join us in morning animal chores of collecting eggs and feeding the goats. Our fire pit is a wonderful evening activity after a day at the beach or enjoying the sites of Portsmouth.

We can interact as much or as little as you desire. We love to meet new folks and will be happy to give you advice on the area....but if it's privacy you crave...than it is yours! Just let us know! We will be minimally in the kitchen to restock the shelves for your self serve breakfast and to access the fridge.

NOTE: The ladder is steep and the lofts are high. They are ideal for children 7 and up. Weight Limit for loft space is 200 pounds. Also be aware these are cozy loft bunks which may not be suitable for adults over 6 feet or who dislike small places.

YOGA: Schedule a private Yoga class with Jonas Zev.
ADVENTURE: We can also provide guided hikes and kayaking excursions based in availability.

Feel free to spend time with one of our many furry creatures. We currently have a Great Pyrenees pup (Her name is SHASTA) who is in training as a Livestock Guardian Dog, three adopted cats, 5 Nigerian Dwarf Goats and 40 Chickens. We are a no-kill homestead and use only the eggs and milk from our flock and herd. We do ask that you enter the paddock areas only when we are home for safety reasons.

RENT THE WHOLE PROPERTY! And have exclusive use of all the common spaces. We have enough beds to sleep 11 folks. Please make a special inquiry so we can adjust the pricing accordingly. Cost: $500.00/night

Both Shilo Farm & Amylyn & Jonas were fantastic! Starting with the farm itself, it is very beautiful and location-wise just the right balance of being tucked away in a quiet area, whilst being very close to major highways and towns (Kittery/Portsmouth) for ease of commute (by car). The barn was fantastic and very well put together, feeling very homey! The sleep number bed was exceptionally comfortable and whilst there are the natural farm noises that chickens & goats make in the morning we didn't find it hard to sleep either! Some might be a little concerned over using a composting toilet over the regular type (indeed it was my first time) but let me put your minds at rest as it was very easy and worked surprisingly well!!! The farm was furnished in a very welcoming and efficient manner & we even had fresh eggs form the farm itself which were delicious. You can easily get to downtown Kittery or Portsmouth within about 10mins drive & Portland ME is only 50 mins drive away, which is perfect for those visiting with a car. Overall, we were very happy and would love to go back- thanks again!

What an amazing weekend! Every detail was perfect. The property is stunning - feels a million miles from civilization but with the convenience of a 5 min drive to phenomenal restaurants and experiences. We loved exploring the property, feeding the animals, collecting eggs and making fires in the fire pit. Amylyn and Jonas have not neglected a single detail in putting their home together - world-class design (hand made stair bannister), wonderful amenities (sleep number bed), sustainable set-up (composting toilet). The house was stocked with everything we needed including local snacks and beverages. The farm itself is so cool. For city folk like us, we loved getting to experience a small slice of the farm-life, feeding the goats and collecting eggs every morning. Amylyn and Jonas were gracious hosts, incredibly warm and hospitable. They have built and run a truly one-of-a-kind experience that I would put shoulder to shoulder with some of the leading eco-focused resorts in the world. We will definitely be back and would recommend this as a must-do-trip to anyone on the eastern seaboard. Andy

This is our second visit to Shilo Farm, staying the converted barn. We love everything about this place. The interior and exterior surroundings are naturally beautiful, reflecting the couples commitment to living simply and environmentally responsible. Amylyn and Jonas are extraordinarily warm and welcoming, and were delightfully attentive to our nearly 7 year old daughter. Thank you so much for another wonderful stay!

Amylyn & Jonas were amazing hosts from beginning to end. Check in was super easy, and upon arrival we were greeted by the beautiful yet powerful Shasta, their guardian dog. The property itself was as charming (if not more) as advertised. Amylyn & Jonas offered plenty of suggestions for activities/ food places and left the lines of communication as open or closed as we wanted. They even let us help with animal chores and set us up for a bonfire at night. If relaxation and recharging is what you're looking for, you've found it here. I highly recommend and hope to be back in the future when the yoga studio/ community center opens up. P.S. Compost toilets are awesome!

If you have a "Bucket-List" you MUST add Amylyn and Jonas' Shilo Farm to that list! They are as guest friendly as they are earth friendly and their home exudes with peace and quiet and perfection everywhere you look! I got teary eyed when it was time to leave!!! This is a top notch retreat with artistic touches and down home hospitality. We'll definitely be back!

Fabulous, relaxing location with an interesting, well thought out space. The photos don't quite do it justice, as there are interesting little details throughout the apartment. Breakfast was provided-eggs from the chickens whose coop is adjacent-along with coffee, milk, cereals and some fruit. Neighboring barn space/entryway was all very clean and tidy. Flowers placed here and there. Amylyn and Jonas' time and energy caring for their home, animals and gardens were reflected everywhere. They were very helpful in terms of suggestions and answering our questions, and also unobtrusive as we came and went. Location is very convenient to Portsmouth, Kittery, beaches. Car needed unless bike touring, as mentioned in the description. Highly recommend. Would have liked to stay longer, but dates were booked.

A very special experience! Super zen and cozy with fresh cut flowers and other thoughtful touches everywhere. Our kids (8 and 10) loved the lofts, the tree swings and helping Amylyn out with barn chores, and we loved the proximity to food, beaches and shopping in Portsmouth and coastal Maine. Thank you!
