Internet via rechargeable modem available upon request only - service can be upgraded to wi-fi for long-term tenants. Property is completely fenced, safe and secure, making it an excellent place for children, and there is a dog (gentle with kids, but an excellent guard dog) on premise for extra security. Fees include caretaker/garden support as well as weekday cleaning. Cooking, and child care can be arranged at extra cost, with the owners' long-time and much-loved household manager, Juanita. Nearby caretaker / guardian, Nelson (Juanita's husband, also long-term and much loved!), can serve as driver on nearby adventures (you can negotiate fee with him directly). Long-term renters will assume costs of water, electric, cable and internet. On outskirts of Coban (5 minute drive, 20 minute walk) to access shopping, restaurants, and public transportation. Safe and trusted taxis available upon request. Ideal place for families or small groups to hunker down and explore the wonder of Semuc Champey, the crystalline waters of Laguna Lachua, or spelunking and tubing adventures of Chisec, or for groups in town for Coban Marathon, Rabin Ajau, and Semana Santa. Fabulous birding in the region - we can link you with birding tours. 6 hours from Tikal and Cancuen Maya ruins. Spanish language schools available in Coban. Also an ideal place for artists and writers looking for an affordable retreat, and development professionals who seek a more homey base when on their weeks-long field visits.
Short-term guests will have access to full outdoor space and the main and / or back house, depending on size of group. Long-term guests will also be granted use of the home office. Please ask Juanita or Nelson for laundry services support. If internet connection is desired please advise beforehand so we can give guest the modem number and it can be charged. Improved internet access can be arranged for long-term renters.
We can interact via email, text, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) and phone as often as is required as soon as reservation is confirmed. Prior to confirmation the interaction must occur through Airbnb platform. Caretakers are available as needed. If totally privacy is desired by short-term renters, we can ask Juanita and Nelson to only come for absolutely necessary work. Otherwise Nelson is on the property Monday - Friday, and comes on weekends to care for animals. Juanita comes 2 - 3 times a week or as needed.
Security is an issue in Guatemala, and we have worked to make our property safe and secure. We know of no other place in Coban that offers such a beautiful and extensive area that is also truly secure AND offers complete privacy.
1.No smoking in house.
2.Garbage must be disposed of appropriately (composting, separation of what can be recycled).
3. Be relatively conservative with water use in dry season.
4. We reccomend you unplug your computers in storm conditions (wind, thunderstorms and lightening) as fallen trees and branches can cause electrical surges (all outlets in house are grounded, but this is a safeguard). 5. Please ask permission before bringing your own pets. Our dog, or your dogs or other pets are not allowed into garden area (keep gate to garden closed) or into the house.
6. Be aware of noise levels out of respect for neighbors (we are trying to cultivate this in the neighborhood).
7. Safe use of wood burning stove and outdoor fire pit.
8. Dinner parties up to 10 people allowed.
Other than that, there are no rules, and we hope all guests find the incredible peace and joy and connection with place that we experienced over the 9 years we lived there full time!
We've lived and worked on and off in Guatemala since 1990 and have considered Coban our home since 1997. Currently living in the United States but with frequent visits to Central America. We love our home in Coban (our children were raised there, our daughter was born in the house!) and hope our guests will find their time there to be deeply relaxing and grounding.
