Country home & lush gardens - Coban

Sweet country home on outskirts of Coban. Abundance of songbirds, native plants and garden space on two acre retreat in a small and quiet neighborhood. Excellent vacation place for families or professionals who seek hotel alternatives while in A.V.

A truly unique and hidden 2 acre paradise in the high mountain coffee and spice lands of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. Delight in the abundance of orchids, songbirds (more recent bird count on property - 137!) and the sounds, smells and lush landscape of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. Enjoy the starry nights next to the outdoor fire pit. Small, sweet and safe country home and back house that sleep up to 8 (3 bedrooms and futon), two bathrooms, plus back-up latrine. Room on the property for pitching tents, or to set up extra cots for larger groups. Separate home office. Fire-burning stove in house for cold winter months. Rainwater catchment system gravity feeds into house with back-up municipal water. Back-up generator if electricity fails. Seasonal garden provides an abundance of fresh salad greens, kale and herbs. Potential for chicken flock to be restored for long-term renters. Full kitchen (includes coffee maker, microwave, toaster, blender, juicer, crockpot), washer and dryer, cable TV and CD player. Internet via rechargeable modem available upon request only - service can be upgraded to wi-fi for long-term tenants. Property is completely fenced, safe and secure, making it an excellent place for children, and there is a dog (gentle with kids, but an excellent guard dog) on premise for extra security. Fees include caretaker/garden support as well as weekday cleaning. Cooking, and child care can be arranged at extra cost, with the owners' long-time and much-loved household manager, Juanita. Nearby caretaker / guardian, Nelson (Juanita's husband, also long-term and much loved!), can serve as driver on nearby adventures (you can negotiate fee with him directly). Long-term renters will assume costs of water, electric, cable and internet. On outskirts of Coban (5 minute drive, 20 minute walk) to access shopping, restaurants, and public transportation. Safe and trusted taxis available upon request. Ideal place for families or small groups to hunker down and explore the wonder of Semuc Champey, the crystalline waters of Laguna Lachua, or spelunking and tubing adventures of Chisec, or for groups in town for Coban Marathon, Rabin Ajau, and Semana Santa. Fabulous birding in the region - we can link you with birding tours. 6 hours from Tikal and Cancuen Maya ruins. Spanish language schools available in Coban. Also an ideal place for artists and writers looking for an affordable retreat, and development professionals who seek a more homey base when on their weeks-long field visits.

Short-term guests will have access to full outdoor space and the main and / or back house, depending on size of group. Long-term guests will also be granted use of the home office. Please ask Juanita or Nelson for laundry services support. If internet connection is desired please advise beforehand so we can give guest the modem number and it can be charged. Improved internet access can be arranged for long-term renters.

We can interact via email, text, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) and phone as often as is required as soon as reservation is confirmed. Prior to confirmation the interaction must occur through Airbnb platform. Caretakers are available as needed. If totally privacy is desired by short-term renters, we can ask Juanita and Nelson to only come for absolutely necessary work. Otherwise Nelson is on the property Monday - Friday, and comes on weekends to care for animals. Juanita comes 2 - 3 times a week or as needed.

Security is an issue in Guatemala, and we have worked to make our property safe and secure. We know of no other place in Coban that offers such a beautiful and extensive area that is also truly secure AND offers complete privacy.

1.No smoking in house.
2.Garbage must be disposed of appropriately (composting, separation of what can be recycled).
3. Be relatively conservative with water use in dry season.
4. We reccomend you unplug your computers in storm conditions (wind, thunderstorms and lightening) as fallen trees and branches can cause electrical surges (all outlets in house are grounded, but this is a safeguard). 5. Please ask permission before bringing your own pets. Our dog, or your dogs or other pets are not allowed into garden area (keep gate to garden closed) or into the house.
6. Be aware of noise levels out of respect for neighbors (we are trying to cultivate this in the neighborhood).
7. Safe use of wood burning stove and outdoor fire pit.
8. Dinner parties up to 10 people allowed.
Other than that, there are no rules, and we hope all guests find the incredible peace and joy and connection with place that we experienced over the 9 years we lived there full time!

We had a good time, it is very close, almost inside Cobán. Recommendations for guest: The fridge is small so we recommend to bring a cooler just in case you bring a lot of food. To have a better and more relaxing experience we will recommend to bring disposable dishes since there is not enough water pressure to wash dishes and that takes away a lot of time. Apart from that all good!

Michaelyn and Erick were very attentive- checking in with us regularly while we stayed at their beautiful home in Coban. Nelson, the gardener/caretaker and Irma, the house help, were both very friendly and helpful. We felt safe and secure there with the caretaker visiting daily, the fencing and the dogs. The location is great. Just far enough out of town to get away from the bustle, but close enough to walk in easily. Public transport into town is very close by as well. Beautiful lush gardens with a nice vegetable garden area. Our children enjoyed the large yard and covered porch area- on the many rainy days we spent in Coban. The accommodations were more than adequate and there was more than enough space for the 5 of us. We were glad that there was a small wood burning stove and used it a number of times during some very chilly wet days. Though it is not extremely efficient, it definatly helped take the edge off the cold damp, dark times. The hot water shower was nice as well. The main thing we found challenging were the 2 dogs. They were friendly enough, but the young one was at a stage of needing to chew alot and he tore a few of our socks and other articles of clothing. The large one we kept in his kennel during the day and let out in the evening. We recognize that security is important and the fact that people notice the dogs there can be helpful, but the large one often barked very loudly at random times in the evening and night. This was quite annoying and woke us from our sleep a few times. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and we would certainly recommend the place for anyone planning a visit to Coban.

Beautiful secluded location, well away from the bustle of Coban. High points were definitely the garden and Nelson who was very friendly, helpful and talkative. Thank you for sharing your house with us.
Thank you Sheila for staying with us. We are glad you enjoyed the place and would be happy to host you again. Kind regards, Michaelyn

Excelente lugar, totalmente recomendado para pasar unos días de relajación, gracias por compartir tan bello lugar.

The house is very well equipped, not that far from town and very quiet neighborhood, internet access was a USB modem access not wireless since we didn't really needed it, it wasn't a problem, but should be considered. I would definitely rent it again

We've lived and worked on and off in Guatemala since 1990 and have considered Coban our home since 1997. Currently living in the United States but with frequent visits to Central America. We love our home in Coban (our children were raised there, our daughter was born in the house!) and hope our guests will find their time there to be deeply relaxing and grounding.
