The neighborhood was awesome! Right off a main street and walking distance to Vatican City, but quiet. There was a market right down the block from the apartment every day that was there-fresh fruits and veggies, bread, cheese, meats, ... The cafe down the street, I think Cafe Bracciolo is the name, was AMAZING!!! The employees were so nice and welcoming and the capuccinos were delicious!!
The address given on the web site is incorrect.....not even the right street. I texted Matisa 30 minutes before estimated arrival and then lugged my baggage around the neighborhood for 1 hour before we finally met at a spot I designated. Was it just me or did others have the same experience? I should have had Matisa enter the correct WIFI info into my laptop as I was unable to connect to the internet and repeated messages to Matisa went unanswered. No internet for the entire stay....not earth shattering, but I had some business details to wrap up. The shower alternates between hot and cold water every 1 1/2 - 2 minutes. When returning to the apartment one night, it was very dark and I had trouble with the key to the apartment door. I texted Matisa and she replied that she'd send her husband over . The key finally worked and I texted her back with that info. Unfortunately, her husband had already left and arrived at the apartment to find me already inside. For this I apologize. On the positive side, the bed was very comfortable, the apartment was very quiet, and the location was great. Had I not had the very bad experience of not being able to find the apartment, this review would probably be a little better.
The place is very convenient, very close at walking distance to the city center. The Vatican and other sites are close by, the buses are also close by and run frequently. The place isn't necessarily fancy, but we only used the place to sleep and shower. Besides that, it's close to everything and Matisa provides with as much as she can which is very helpful: from toothbrushes, to touristic maps of Rome. It was a little tricky finding the place at first but once we got a hold of Matisa everything went well.
We did not meet Matisa during this trip, and instead - we met with Maria, who met us outside of the apartment and showed us around. Finding the location of the apartment was a little challenging as it is tucked away. The apartment itself does feel like a locked down metal bunker with a challenging shower - it was either scalding hot or freezing cold (maybe that's the norm for the plumbing??). We ended up showering at a gym nearby. The wifi in the apartment did not work when we arrived... just make sure to communicate with Matisa via airbnb messenger - we received an updated wifi network and password afterward. The location of the apartment is very confusing so perhaps it is best to liase a designated meeting spot for airbnb patrons beforehand. The location is totally unassuming and in a building that does not look residential. The best part of our stay was the little market next to the apartment. We bought fresh produce, meat and cheese daily!! The kitchen itself is as pictured - basic with hotplates as a stove. We appreciated the welcoming bottle of water, extra toothbrushes and basic amenities in the kitchen on our arrival. Having secure parking was a huge plus in this city. Overall, we had a pretty positive experience given the location, secure parking and fresh market next to the apartment.
Matisa was not a very good host to us at all. Being international travelers, we didn't have any WiFi to contact her to get the final details of the location. The number given to us was incorrect and we were left stranded late at night in Rome having to fork out €120 for a night in a hotel that was available. Once we managed to get to an internet cafe the next morning we were able to contact her through the AirBNB messenger and she arranged for a friend to meet us at the address she had just given us. The address was extremely misleading and took us over an hour to find walking up and down the street she mentioned. We even went to every shop and asked for help from the shop assistants and even they couldn't make any sense of how to get to the apartment (half of them didn't even believe the place existed). By some miracle we stumbled upon a very inconspicuous side street and found the apartment, only to find that the WiFi details she had provided us with also incorrect, once again making it impossible for us to contact her for further assistance. While the place was windowless and felt like basement and the water temperature was very temperamental (scalding hot one second, ice cold the next with no pattern to it), not to mention the loud noises of crashing and banging and the late night (yet talented) guitar player. The least I could say is that it was clean and the beds were comfortable.
