Quaint 'cook house' cottage outside our patio in the rear of our home.
Oakdale Guest Cottage was originally a cook house used for summer cooking in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In 1988 our family remodeled the building and it has been a guest home ever since. The Cottage has a king size bed, twin bed, kitchenette, bathroom, sitting area, and kitchen table on the first floor, and a queen bed in the loft.
In 1981 Dave and I moved to Floyd to join our friends who were artists already living here. Much of our home and the cottage is adorned with pottery and artwork from our friends.
We do have WiFi and cable TV, but advise you that cell phone service is often spotty, with Verizon having the most coverage in the area.
Our property is located one mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway and 11 miles from the town of Floyd. Hiking is out the front door and we have a secluded swimming pond in the woods with beach and dock.
The town of Floyd is very fun with the Friday Night Jamboree and weekly events. Floyd boasts great restaurants, hiking, cycling on the parkway, local coffee roasters, bakery, organic farms, bee sanctuary, wineries, and health food store which offers something for everyone. This is a culturally rich county • full of artists and musicians.
Also as far as bringing pets are concerned, please know that while we love dogs we are concerned that you do not allow them on any furniture or beds. In addition please do not plan on leaving them alone in the cottage unless you have discussed this with us in advance.
Important: Words of advice. A GPS, map quest, phone maps, etc. do not always work for our roads. The phone app "waze" seems to know our roads the best. Use the itinerary to get to our cottage.
Pond, trails, 80 acres, dirt roads, ping pong, basketball, & hammock. Ask us about using our grill.
We often are there to greet our guests. In the event that we are out for the evening we will pre-arrange arrival instructions.
We do have two dogs who are often here to great you as well. They are very friendly. Also there are seasonal issues we should mention. Spring, sometimes summer, and fall we have guests that frequent the cottage. Stink Bugs.
We love dogs but have a strict rule that they do not go up on the chairs or beds. Also dogs may not be left alone in the cottage. There will a $150 fee if your dog is found to have gone up on the beds or chairs. Sorry, no cats.
My husband and I have lived in our home since 1981. It is the first and only home we have ever owned. Both of our grown children were raised in Floyd and now live in Washington D.C. Floyd is like no other place we know, and we plan on living here indefinitely. We have organic gardens, horses, dogs and enjoying our children and friends.
