The Introduction to Eco Printing is a fun, magical journey into an unfamiliar space where the plants around us are invited to become co-creators. Especially in the fynbos region this is a particularly magical exploration as each plant seems to have it’s own ‘colour signature’ and the textures of these hardy plants, even if they do not contain colour, create beautifully fine ‘resist prints’. The process of eco-printing is essentially very simple. Plants are placed onto fabric and then rolled and tied up to form a bundle. This bundle is then boiled or steamed depending on the desired effect. Within this basic method there are many variations and possibilities and so the workshop is designed to give you a solid foundation to eco-printing which is as inspiring as a one day experience as it is enabling for further explorations at home. First we will explore how to test the plants in your area for colour, then we will create bundles that will be steamed to create prints on a light back ground and after that another set of bundles that will be boiled in a natural dye to give you strong colour contrasts. If you are new to eco-printing this may all sound a bit daunting ...rest assured that you will be guided all the way and you will go home with at least three beautifully printed fabrics or garments.
I am a fabric artist specialising in eco-printing, a magically alchemical process in which the elements of fire, water and air combine to extract pigments from plants to create unique, organic imprints onto fabric. Having worked exclusively with this technique for the past 5 years I have refined it to suit my own environment and expression. I have been included into Fabric Works, a collective of South African fabric artists promoting fabric art as an art form as well as having work on permanent display at the Kim Sacks gallery, known for its exceptional collection of craft in Johannesburg. I am self-taught in this beautiful art form that is all about surrendering to the co-creative dance with nature and although by no means an 'expert' would love to invite you along on your own journey of discovery into the magic of Eco-printing.
A light vegetarian lunch and tea will be provided. Feel free to bring your own in between snacks and drinks.
All the technical equipment needed for successful eco-printing will be provided. This includes pots, gas cookers, sticks,…
Experience the Magic of Eco-printing will take place at Amani House, 14 Martingale Avenue, Hout Bay. This venue at the back of Table Mountain is a beautiful showcase of sustainable living in action with three food gardens, a chakra garden, an earth-ship built from discarded tyres, ceremonial spaces and off-grid living spaces.
最多可有10位年满10周岁的参与者参加。 An open mind is all it takes
This experience will provide you with a safe space in which to connect in a unique but guided way with the unique fynbos plants of the Western Cape. You will love the fabrics you print and will cherish them for long after returning home from this experience.
