Marbled silk scarves are made by layering colorful dyes onto a solution of water and cellulose. This process allows the dyes to float above the liquid. Using custom made combs or rakes, the layers of color are then manipulated into unique designs. When the fabric is placed on top of the composition and absorbs the dye colors, it transfers onto the silk scarf, creating the marbling affect. If you’ve ever wanted to make your own hand-dyed silk scarf or just want to see how it’s done, this is the workshop for you.
I have been doing fabric marbeling for 10 years. I was raised in Israel and have lived in California since 2001. In a moment of serendipity, I had the good fortune to meet Zohara Shenkman, owner of Chakra Rain bows Company, a talented graphic artist and master of the technique of marbling on silk. Zohara gave me the opportunity to learn this process under her guidance and to begin to develop my own technique. I will always appreciate her generosity and mentorship. Since then, I've explored the elements of my craft and experimented with dyes and colors to refine my style and designs. Working in my home studio, I've been able to express my design perspective and create unique custom textiles, decorative framed art and even inlay fabric designs for surfboards.
