I'll pick you up from Auckland CBD (or an agreed location if you let me know beforehand). We'll drive to a fantastic walk at Whatipu, Auckland’s West Coast just an hour drive from central Auckland. The drive is about 45 km parts of it cutting through a scenic native forest. Once there we'll walk from car park through native bush to the beach with views of small islands. There is also an option to see caves on a side track. I will show you how to take it slow, see the light, find the right angles and notice those tiny things in the surroundings that often go unnoticed. There will be the chance for you to practice with your own camera (any camera would work, phone, digital SLR or point&shoot). I'll also take your photos if you like, with your own camera or with my professional DSLR. We will return to car park via same track. The activity doesn't require any previous training in photography, just a keen interest to see the world in a different way. That also means it isn't an advanced photography workshop. You'll see a new place, learn to see things differently and improve your travel shots.
I have photographed landscapes and nature for over 20 years. I am a keen nature explorer and spend most of my spare time walking in nature and photographing landscapes, tiny things on the forest floor, and when the conditions allow, the starry night sky. When I'm travelling nature photography is the core of my itinerary. I have taught principles of photography and the art of seeing light on a number of occasions, now I'm keen to share the knowledge with travelers or locals who share an interest in photography and nature.
Water and snacks.
My car or a rental car depending on the number of attendees.
Whatipu beech walk is one of Auckland's best nature walks. It is easy and flat going through native bush with soft black sand underfoot. Parts of it can be waterlogged after rain, so bring walking shoes or maybe try walking barefoot, the sand is soft. You'll get to see scenic hills, lagoons, coastal views, little islands and quite often a variety of NZ birds.
