After meeting at the main entrance to Black Dragon Pool (Heilongtan), we'll drive for about 30 minutes to the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Our hike takes place outside the Scenic Area and well away from the crowded tourist trail. Beginning at the trailhead, we'll have a short climb along a swift mountain stream and dense pine forest before breaking into the open. Here, we'll get our first view of Lijiang in the distance. We'll continue climbing a moderately-steep trail through scattered pines and huge boulders for another kilometer before entering the broad, flower-filled, glacially carved valley known as Dry River Valley (Ganheba). Here the trail becomes nearly flat for the remainder of the climb. We'll find a suitable place for a picnic lunch and enjoy the beauty and solitude of this alpine wonderland. After lunch, we'll continue a little further up the valley or return the way we came with plenty of time to take photos or lounge in the meadows. If time allows, we can stop at a cafe in Yuhu Village for cold drinks and a little sightseeing on the way back to Lijiang. We usually arrive back in Lijiang by around 5:30pm.
