After meeting the potter, guest will get to see the work environment and be able to look at work previously done. A short video and/or talk will be given to instruct them on what the process looks like and describe what they will be doing. Then the guess will choose from a variety of previously made ceramic pieces that will be placed into the kiln. The piece they choose will be theirs to decorate when it is removed from the kiln about 30 to 45 minutes later. It will also be theirs as a memento of the experience. Each guest will be coached as how to apply sugar, feathers and or horsehair to the piece they chose to do. While the pieces are in the kiln and being brought to temperature, the time will be used for questions and answers and any discussion concerning pottery and this process. Before the guest actually do their piece with this technique, the potter will remove a piece from the kiln and do a live demo of the process. When this has been completed, each guest will have their opportunity to decorate the piece they have chosen. Again, when the process is completed, each person will get to take home the item they did. This is a highly unique experience. It might be watched on YouTube or other places, but it is a rare chance to actually participate. It is interesting to watch but exciting to do!
I am an experienced professional potter and received my BA in ceramics at Minnesota State University at Moorhead (MSUM) with honors in 2011. I had several years experience prior to participating in the undergraduate program. While attending MSUM I was mentored by world renowned potter Brad Bachmeier in the art of Raku. There are lots of potters but only a small number utilize this technique. I am one. I have assisted Brad Bachmeier demoing to students and prospective students. I have demonstrated this technique to many on my own. I create a very unique look by applying sugar, feathers and horsehair to the surfaces of pottery that is removed from the kiln and while it is still red hot. I offer my skill to help others experience a one of kind experience.
